My last, and most productive, DLH plant that I removed today. The vine is about 12 feet long, produced over 50 tomatoes, and the yield was close to 35 lbs. in total. I saved 200 or so seeds from this plant, and that is what I'm sending for recent requests. RIP DLH, you did good!!!

Darin, why pull it so early? You've got 2 months till frost! Was it spent?

Nan- yes, they were all spent! they were coming back at the top, but most of my plants were brown and riddled with ailments of all kinds. There is no way I could have gotten more fruit in the time left. I planted out rather early- and I planted so densely that the leaves could not get adequate ventilation. I learned some lessons for next year- I won't plant nearly so many and will space them out more.

off topic question. What kind of car is that?
off topic question. What kind of car is that?
A 2013 Fiat 500 Abarth. My daily driver. 40 mpg, and a snarly little beast with 200 hp under the tiny hood. The best description of my driving impression is that it's like driving a ticked-off squirrel. Zip zip!:D

Like it's looks for a city car. Sort of like an Smart car on serious steroids! Looks easy to park, too.

Nice specimen Nan! Is the flavor good? I just saw Oakley's post about orange hearts- those don't have the same shape as what I usually see. His are slightly "hearty", but not particularly pointed. I think I should get him some fresh seeds!!

Darin, I can actually taste this one! There are very few tomatoes I can taste. I like it!

My mom and I, at the same time, said, "This would make a good fried green."

Since that's what I wanted in the first place, fried greens will be the next experiment.

oops, sorry Oakley!!!

Nan, we didn't fry up any green tomatoes this year. But we sure had a bunch!!! Are yours still producing??

Nan_PA_6b September 10, 2017 10:24 PM

Yep, still ripening the large greenies one by one, and has a couple golf balls that hopefully will ripen before frost. It's holding up to the Septoria rather well.

BTW, Darin, you have my permission to use any of my photos or comments concerning Dotson's Lebanese Heart.

Thank you Nan! I really appreciate you growing it out and I hope that it will be one to return to your garden!

Thanks Karen! Do you have any pictures to share? I think I'm fine on seeds. I have about 200 saved from this year, plus another 100 or so from Dutch. I have been getting requests over the last month and have been providing about 15 seeds each.

Fried green tomatoes are the way I like my 'maters best. I even slice and put green ones by in the freezer for frying in the off-season. They're indistinguishable from fresh.
