Forgot to mention some things, and found some pics. I grow Alisa Craig as I want bigger onions. I started them in frog farm, and added fish emulsion when needed.

Today is December 1. I gave up on the struggling seedlings today and sat them outside on a table. I used the same brand of pro mix this year as I did last year with completely opposite results. It's too late to start over, so we'll be buying onion sets instead.

It may not be too late for some varieties like Bermudas or Vidalia types. You will have to settle for much smaller onions though. I have started onion seed this late and made a fair amount of onions but they tended to be about half normal size. The ones that did the best planted late like that were started in the ground in raised beds and kept under hoops during below freezing nights so they didn't experience that slow down from getting too cold but I had to be careful to remove the cover before it got hot inside every day.

Richard, now is a ideal time to show those exhibition onions I sent you, and the compost you are going to use is ideal with the extra Epsom salt added ,or you could split the packet and try half in compost and the rest in a damp paper towel, just keep them frost free and they should germinate as they are very hardy
