Here's the progress of those little yellow spots. Does this help with the diagnosis?

Thanks, Karen. So this is just the result of the sucking? I was worried it might be a disease/virus transmitted via the sucking.

it can become that. definitely sucking insects can spread viruses. also, plants weakened are more susceptible to any other disease. In effect, it is a deficiency in that they suck nutrients that the plant needs. a healthy plant can spare a bit of sap but honeydew left behind by aphids, nymphs etc also becomes a breeding ground for black mold and various other fungus problems. nothing exists in isolation and often spotty leaves are displaying more than one problem. since you said you see whiteflies that is most likely in your case. early and mild so far so should be able to control the problem. Do as Marsha advises. sticky trps for the adults will thin them out.
keep weed and grasses nearby mowed as they are often the source

Viruses transmitted by the whiteflies will show in the youngest foliage.
