I'm always interested in where varieties I first found kinda ended up, if you know what I mean, http://t.tatianastomatobase.com:88/wiki/Sherrill
I got Sherrill in a seed trade on a forum. I had sort of low expectations because it is not the "type" of tomato I prefer. Boy was I surprised. It is good enough for fresh eating and solid enough for a canner/paste tomato. I think it is better than the much praised Opalka. So Carolyn, your tomato ended up in my belly. |
Nice site, the Nazca tomato looks and sounds very interesting. If I haven't already had so many seeds to plant already, I would check that one out for sure.
Nazca for sure was interesting. Grew like a weed. |
Very nice website and lightning fast delivery!
Rare varieties - WHO can ask for more?? Amazing! Thanks Steve!
I really appreciate the nice comment and the business. I'm glad to hear your seeds got there. |
Man was that quick. I got my seeds in today. Well package and fast. Thank you for the extra pack

I usually have a lot of extra plants. Since you are so close, you might want to check back with me in March and I will give you a few tomato plants to try. -Steve
Sorry for the late reply. Plants would be awesome, I'm not so great at starting seeds. :)) I really like the looks of this one- http://www.doublehelixfarms.com/sugar Lots of little red tomatoes would make my kids so happy! I'll get in touch with you through your website. Thanks! |
I just spent the last two days planting 3000 tomato seeds. I have to say the seed from Double Helix was the best to work with. So many times seed is stuck together but these were all individual loose seeds. This really helps when planting. Steve, not sure what you do to get such clean seed but it is appreciated! Thanks!

I am growing nearly every variety that I purchased - which says a lot because I am seed whore and have thousands of other tomatoes to grow -
and germination was excellent and Dragoevo and Favorite Holiday were my first to produce. DHF has a HUGE fan here!! Raspberry Miracle is the best tasting tomato in my garden this year. Thanks so much!! |
Any idea as to when Double Helix will be back on line?

Steve called me the day before thanksgiving and I was so glad b'c I'd been trying to reach him several times via e-mail b'c I grew out three of the several varieties he sent me and had some questions. It's been a horrible year for him. First it was a knee problem and then with the drought he lost most of his plants and that included those that he was working on with his breeding efforts. And I don't think he'd mind me sharing that then he started feeling awful, and cutting to the chase he was diagnosed with both Rocky Mt Spotted Fever and Erlichiosis, both confirmed by serology. And he just hasn't recovered all that well and said he had no energy at all. So to answer your question, I don't know when he'll be back on line but he should get this post sent to home, I think, and maybe, if that's true, he can stop by.If I see nothing from him in the next couple of weeks here at his site I can try to reach him via e-mail again. I have been wondering about his site myself. I hope things turn around for him!

Thanks for letting us know, Carolyn. I had been keeping an eye on his site, too, and am sorry to hear he's had such a bad year and taxing health problems. He's another terrific new vendor and I wish him well. Darlene

I got a surprise phone call from Steve this afternoon and he said he's been spending full time writing the descriptions for all of the new varieties and uploading the pictures.
He expects to be done in the next few days with all the updating for his 2013 varieties at his website. Carolyn |
Wonderful news, thank you Carolyn!
Steve, all the best to you and speedy recovery!!! |
That is Great News! :)

Yes, thanks Carolyn.:)

Hmmm,
I am considering if I should take a look at the site (when it´s on). Because if i fell in love with something and he will not ship to Germany it would not really make me happy. Does anyone know if he will ship?? :D Simone |
I've received seeds from him in the UK, so I would think he would send to Germany.
You could always email him once the site is back up to check? His site has such lovely pictures, I'm really looking forward to seeing his new additions. Steve, hope you feel better very soon. |

Website seems back up - WOOHOO!
Amazing new varieties. |
Heading over to check it out :)

Yeppers...DH is back on line. The seed I ordered from him last year did very well for me...in fact; I will be incorporating some of the chocolate fatalis I grew out from DH seed into some spicy dishes this weekend. Hope you are feeling MUCH better, Steve!

Thanks for all the kind words of encouragement.
I wrote a blog on the website that sort of explains what has been going on in my world the last 6 or 7 months. I hope you take the time to read it. |
Steve,
What a class act! Speedy recovery! & to quote your blog (which I hope is OK because it's an amazing read) - this exponentially to the 10th power..
"It was not the year I wanted it to be, but it was good enough. Being thankful for what I have and finding contentment in where I have come from is enough. I have failed at many things, I am broken, and I have many flaws. But I am a real person and in spite of all my shortcomings I have people in my life that find value in me. I am the person I say I am. I don’t have to pretend to be a hayseed farmer or a huge corporation just to get someone to by my seeds. I have a lot of hope. I have hope for next year being better. I have hope that this business will succeed. I have hope that I will breed a tomato that will outlive me. But mostly I hope to spend more time living in the moment. I hope to make more of an effort to find contentment with what I have and not obsess about what I don’t have. None of us will leave this world with anything.
|
Steve,
I hope everything will be well with you, and I wish you all the best with your business. You have a very interesting selection in your catalog! Tatiana |
Steve,
I took the time to read your blog, and I must say your words were inspiring to me. Thank you for taking the time to write them down for all of us. Also, thank you for the Fishlake Oxhearts!! :) and I must admit I was pleasantly surprised to see tarragon seeds, so thank you for those as well. Gary |
Steve,
Great to see you back posting and growing! Your passion for growing tomatoes may be your sole personality flaw:) Steve |
That is very nice of you Surf4grrl. Did you notice the Trinidad Perfume Pepper. Hmm, wonder where that came from. Thanks again.
|
Steve, Gary, and Tatiana, thank you so much. Glad to hear from everyone.
|
Thank You for the blog!
I agree that your words are inspiring. Please take care. Deb |
