I highly respect your opinion on these matters/maters so when it dries out I will stick 2 Carbon in the dirt. The varieties I have to choose from are Vorlon, Carbon, Absinthe, NA red, Stump OTW, CP, Prudens purple and Wapsipinicon peach. Suggestions? :dizzy:
There are some great ones there. Maybe except Wapsinicon Peach, very ordinary in my garden, but who knows? Might be excellent in yours since our growing conditions are so different. Absinthe was good, but for a GWR, I really loved Aunt Ruby's German Green, and also Cherokee Lime, which were both outstanding.:)
The rest are truly excellent, esp. Pr.Purp. and Stump. Vorlon and NAR and CP are pretty darned good though.you really can't go wrong with those either.

This was the only Brandywine that didn't succumb to root rot and darned if it didn't give me a megablossom. Sometimes the tomatoes trick you into growing them ;)

The plants I have left, sold around 250 so far which mostly paid for what I put into the garden this year. Still have alot of blacks which haven't been selling well.

This big guy/gal? was hiding in the compost. I told him/her to kill any aphids it sees.

My wife and I at the Angel Oak in Charleston. This tree is incredible!
Well I guess that's all for now. Happy growing!
That tree! WoW. I've never seen anything like it.

Sugar drops in my garden had not a speck of antho. Hmmm, my seeds from JandL, and Lee thinks there are some stability issues. I thought this one was OK, since it grew true in my garden.

BigVanVader April 29, 2015 06:45 PM

Several of mine look like the one pictured. It seems to only show up at about that size. Either way I'm excited to see what the fruit looks like 😁

Nice thread! My season won't start for another month, so it's fun to see what others are accomplishing.

Congratulations on getting married!

BigVanVader April 30, 2015 06:36 AM

Thanks Robin!

Looks like your Indian Stripe is a mystery plant since it is supposed to be regular leaf. Should be fun to see what you get!

BigVanVader May 3, 2015 03:41 PM

Wow I didn't even notice that till now. Thanks for reminding me its RL. Oh well life's an adventure!
Wow I didn't even notice that till now. Thanks for reminding me its RL. Oh well life's an adventure!
If those Indian Stripe were from my seeds offer, they very likely are Indian Stripe PL, since that's what I grew and was giving out. I also had a few Indian Stripe Heart, but far more people requested the ISPL. Were those seeds from me?

I just checked my sent mail, and you did indeed request ISPL, so those are growing true! Good news, right?

BigVanVader May 3, 2015 06:22 PM

I believe so Marsha, I will have to check but I think so?

(Edit)**Very good news as I was looking forward to that variety and considering the sugar drop is likely a cross I'd prefer that the rest grow true. Thanks for helping clear that up!

Things are moving along nicely. I went to a local tailgate market that started this weekend. It was nice to be in a more relaxed setting and I sold a lot of plants. I enjoy telling people about heirlooms so much, and it was mostly retired folks there and they seemed to really enjoy hearing about them.

My tomatoes are really taking off now and most are covered in blooms. It hasnt rained in 10 days and I havent had to water anything. Overall the no till beds are performing remarkably well. When I was driving in my stakes I would hit areas where the soil was really soft (which never happens in our clay) and then today I saw the first tomato :D. Another hectic but rewarding week. Here are some pics. Enjoy!

Salsacharley May 11, 2015 08:23 PM

Nice presentation! How did you move all those plants in that car? I suspect you drove home with much fewer.

BigVanVader May 11, 2015 08:28 PM

Thanks! We drove 2 vehicles Charley, after we unloaded we parked it across the street. Yes we sold 104 plants even though ideal planting dates here were weeks ago. I was presently surprised as we went to this market on a whim.

Update. Things are getting crazy :dizzy: almost all plants are setting fruit in huge numbers and I just planted 40 more plants. My son and I took down my colframe plastic/hoops and I tilled the inside and formed some rows. I will later add taller hoops and new plastic in time for winter veggies.

The main crop planted was Gruschevij and Chico 3. I am very excited about the Gruschevij as I love ruffled pear tomatoes. The rest were a mix of plants I had left over that were very leggy. Some already had tiny tomatoes on them but I threw caution to the wind and left them on. I normally pinch all blooms/fruit at transplant but I like to experiment. Here are some pics I hope you enjoy.

Impatiently waiting to see if this is a cross or grows true. I planted another one that was the darkest colored. One seedling had no antho at all so I think its a cross.

Quick update. Everything is doing well and I'm starting to get some ripe veggies. Many tomatoes will start ripening soon. First red tomato was a Glacier and the squash is called butterdish hybrid (Burpee).

ginger2778 June 9, 2015 05:49 AM

Great pictures. I'm enjoying this thread. What do you think that bug is on the squash blossom?

BigVanVader June 9, 2015 07:27 AM

Thanks Marsha! I'm glad you're enjoying it as a lot of the seeds came from you. Those are actually tomato flowers (Big Beef) and that is (I think after lots of googling) an assassin bug. Haven't had many pest problems so far (knock on wood) and I have been seeing lots of benificials.

Well things are starting to ripen and I'm picking tomatoes daily now. I have seen a huge explosion of pest since the heat wave started, mostly caterpillars of all sorts and a few cucumber beetles. My beans are covered in aphids and I have grey mold all over the garden. I have Neem oil and copper fungicide that I have started spraying to help. Most plants continue to do well despite these issues. Here are some pics.

Beautiful Garden! Are you doing the Back to the Eden Method? what type of wood mulch are you using?

BigVanVader July 2, 2015 11:57 AM
Beautiful Garden! Are you doing the Back to the Eden Method? what type of wood mulch are you using?
Thanks Delerium! I'm not really following a specific method but I am using wood chips from Asplundh, they trim trees away from power lines. I got 2 full loads dumped and its is just random stuff all chipped together. I also used a lot of straw mixed with rabbit poop from a local rabbit sanctuary. I discovered last year that wood chips were a great help in conserving water and keeping the roots cool, not to mention the worms seem to love it.

I detail my process in earlier post, essentially no till with a cardboard/manure/leaves/mulch layering system. We just bought this place so it will take a few years to get the soil where it needs to be for optimal plant health and production. My next goals are worm bins, a small area to grow host plants for beneficials, and learning to grow mushrooms as we discussed in your thread. I have lots of little mushrooms that come up in the beds with straw already but they fade quickly once the sun comes out and only reappear after rain/watering.

Really busy with picking everything now and getting the nursery ready. Have been picking a basket full of produce daily for more than a week and with a break in the heat wave I am once again getting good fruit set. Some pics...

ginger2778 July 5, 2015 10:18 PM

My Malachite Box's were bland and mushy too. Never got better all season. I got my seeds in the 2013 Tormato's swap, I wonder if they were right, because I honestly can't figure out why everyone loves them.
I should buy some seeds of it from a commercial vendor and try again.

Great thread. Great photos.

BigVanVader August 3, 2015 10:58 AM

Thanks Charles, I need to update this thread but I'm so busy right now. Where in SC are you located? I'm about 20 mins from Greenville. Welcome to Tomatoville!
