I honestly don't know if I can bring tomatoes for slicing & tasting--I have a nasty case of early blight (I'm pretty sure) that is causing havoc. But I will bring a dynamite roasted tomato soup (cold) that can be made from "uglies."

As soon as I can find someone to come with me, I'm in!! I'm a little nervous driving several hours to a place I've never been. I love to drive, I'm just afraid of getting lost or the car breaking down!!!

Can I bring ribs, or is there something else you want from me? I'm not sure about tomatoes. They're not "show" quality - just "eating" quality!!!! But, of course, if I have some tomatoes, I will bring them.

DonnaMarieNJ July 30, 2006 08:29 PM

Is there a decent hotel nearby? Could someone recommend some for me? TIA!

gflynn July 31, 2006 10:33 AM

PolarLace,

If you were willing we could use a case of soda in a cooler or the 5 gallon self dispensing water container. Also any kind of meat that could be tossed on a grill. That could include hotdogs, hamburgers, Chicken ect.

We will have a grill or two rolling and Cecilia's Husband has offered to grill. I figure everyone will probably bring something eat. This could include stup to toss on a grill or a tomato dish for the contests so we will have plenty to eat.

If some was to bring a salad that would be nice. I am betting we will have lots of that considering how well it goes with tomatoes.

Donna Marie,

Cecilia's Husband had a reunion at the park where we are having the event so I'll bet he could tell us where his friends stayed. I sent Cecilia an email so she should be posting here soon.

Do come if you can and Ribs would be a great addition. As far as tomatoes looking good, fear not, this is a taste competition. What we would like to see most is variety. If you have anything that others haven't grown or brought that would be most welcomed.

The only restriction is we don't want store bought tomatoes in the taste competition but they can be used in recipes that enter competitions.

Also if you have a local farmer that grows his own family heirloom (passed down in his family) this MAY (not sure yet) be allowed in the taste competition. But if you go to the grocery store and they have a "Heirloom" section this is not gonna fly.

Donna Marie - Let me clarify something Greg said -it wasn't a reunion that my DH had at this park; it was a labor day picnic for his union local! Sorry about the confusion! So, none of the people who attended that event had to stay overnight.

The closest hotel to the park is a Quality Inn a mile or two from the park, just off the I-95 exit. It used to be a Holiday Inn Express, but changed hands and was renovated a few years ago. It has an Italian restaurant adjacent to it, which just opened (I haven't even tried it yet!) . The reviews I've read about the hotel on the internet are mixed - some folks say it's a dump, others have praised it. Its address is 1401 Bloomfield Avenue, Baltimore, MD, 21227.

There are several nice hotels in Baltimore's Inner Harbor, which is about 5 miles from the park site - I don't know what your budget is, though, and some of them are rather expensive. If you stayed downtown, however, you could enjoy some of the nearby tourist sites - Harborplace, the National Aquarium, etc.

Another option would be to stay at one of the hotels near BWI Airport. The park is only a 10 minute drive or so from there (I even know a back way that avoids major highways).

I'm coming

Please add my name to the list too--but I think it will just be me.

You can add my name - two people.

I mentioned that I would bring ribs, but I completley forgot about the grill. My ribs will already be cooked and in their own sauce and need to be heated in a pan. Would this be do-able or should I bring something else? And if so, what do you need?

My friend can help slice, cook, etc.

I just got the OK today, so I have to book a place to stay for the night soon.

Cecilia_MD7a August 7, 2006 12:09 PM

Re: Donna's question - does anybody know whether ribs can be re-grilled in a foil pan? I've reheated leftover ones and they were OK, so I would think it could be done, but will they get too dry?

DonnaMarieNJ August 7, 2006 02:04 PM

No, its not a matter of them getting dry, b/c they will be in liquid. I just didn't want to use up the entire grill. Either way, they will have to be reheated if you want me to bring them. Or, I can bring something else!
