Minibel vs Balconi Red vs Maskotka vs Garden Pearl / Gartenperle
I've had these packets of red cherry micros/compact tumblers since 2014! But I kept getting distracted by micro yellows or pears or small slicers.
I have two plants of each under lights at the moment. The Gartenperles are already 3 times bigger than the Minibels!
Results are in! I grew two plants of each variety.

Gartenperle was pink (clear epidermis). Minibel, Balconi Red, and Maskotka were all the usual scarlet red (yellow epidermis).

Gartenperle was the smallest (5g), Balconi Red was larger, and Minibel was the largest (25g). Maskotka was variable - some fruit were as small as Gartenperle and some as large as Maskotka!

Everything was sowed on the same day, and I got fruit from Balconi Red first at the beginning of May, and closely after that Gartenperle, then aaages later Maskotka and then even longer after that Minibel - 2 months later than the Balconi Red!

Balconi Red was a true micro that didn't get taller than 1ft, with rugose foliage. Minibel was very short for months, and then suddenly doubled in height to 18 inches! It had rugose foliage as well. Gartenperle was a compact 1ft tumbler with fine regular leaves. Maskotka was also a tumbler with regular leaves, but it was 18 inches high and sprawled widely.

And the most important part.. The taste! Balconi Red and Gartenperle were too sharp and not sweet enough for me. But Maskotka and Minibel had exactly the kind of taste I like. Minibel had a little more flesh, and Maskotka had a little more gel.

We tried Sweeter Yet about 5-6 years ago and have grown it every year since. For the second year in a row we are also growing Suyo Long, which was recommended here.

Pomodoro de Sorrento vs. Pomodoro "Sorrento Selection"

1 Attachment(s)
Pomodoro Sorrento Selection is beating Pomodoro de Sorrento hands down.
"Selection" is a larger plant, jucier fruit and the taste is far superior to "de Sorrento". "De Sorrento" is mild flavored, few seeds, not juicy. Here's a pic, Sorrento Selection is on the left and di Sorrento is on the right:

Dotson's Lebanese Heart.....vs....Heinz 1439

As far as fried green tomatoes go, both are good, but this year at least, Heinz 1439 is better.

I just read through this whole thread again and most adhered to the question being asked of comparing, well, comparable varieties, like the various Brandywine ones,or a variety that has both an RL and PL version ,etc.,but some decided to list everything they were growing.:?:

Maybe it's just me but I can't see comparing a large pink beefsteak variety with a small medium red variety.:)

I did go pretty far afield. I compared DLH and Heinz as fried greens only, as they were both being used for the same purpose. Ditto for Dr. Carolyn & Wild Tiger, as they were both being trialed as cherries, and had surprising similarities.

Maglia Rosa and Candy Sweet Icicle are two I am comparing this year. No decisive winner for me yet. Son tasted both and though he liked CSI he preferred the MR. and thought it sweeter.
MR started ripening earlier, has smaller fruit .
CSI is a larger plant with larger fruit. Though ripening later it has produced more in weight, so far.
They are very similar in appearance in both plant and fruit. So close they look like they could be related.

Of the ones I've grown, and there a lot on your list of those,I can agree with your flavor ratings.

BUT,here are the ones where I don't agree,to each their own, as is oft said.

Visitation Valley and Latah,I would rate 1 to 2.

As for Latah, and some other comments here you go.

Of Dr. Boes ones my all time,or close to it BAD BAD one is Sandpoint, the link above tells you why.

And I told Glenn to never ask me to eat it again unless it was enrobed in dark chocolate.;)

And of course I can't comment on all the ones that weren't what they were supposed to be.

I am glad you are comparing these two!!

As far as whether they are related, you would have to ask Brad Gates about that.

Although breeders are entitled to some trade secrets!
