Thanks to the squash vine borer, I pulled all my patty pans and all but one zucchini plant yesterday. I'll put carrots and probably some Amber Globe turnips in there. And I have a new packet of Winter Giant spinach, too.

I'd have to agree with Ruth about trying to direct seed that stuff. It's much better to start it under lights and then move it outdoors. I get much better results that way. And although it seems way early to start that stuff, I think it really benfits from getting started during the longer days of summer. I've started some things much later than the recommended planting dates and just never got the same results as plants put out in the latter half of summer. And if you want to be able to eat some of this stuff at Thanksgiving, you have to start it in the summer anyway.

I feel pretty much on schedule right now. So far, I've planted:

Black Palm Tree kale
Ragged Jack kale
Paris Market carrots
Green Glaze collards
Seven Top turnip greens
Amber Globe turnips

I ended up deciding to pull out a grow light and have seedlings for Chieftain Savoy cabbage to go out in a few weeks. It's too early for my spinach and none of my alliums are here yet. Too early to plant those anyway. My summer stuff is slowly finishing up and being pulled so I might add a few more things if I have room. I can't stand to leave any space empty for too long. Might as well grow something on it.
