Started my first seeds today!!!

18 Round Tropea onions

18 Long Tropea onion

36 Ailsa Craig onions (all the seeds I had because they're getting old)

12 unknown shallot seeds sent to me by Tormato in my MMMM packet

I have to start my onion seeds today. I'm behind my normal starting time by two weeks! All my seed starting stuff was scattered in different boxes in the pole barn from our move. Now that I've tracked it all down, the station is set up, and we've figured out a way of keeping the solarium above 40 at night, I can finally start my onions and leeks. I'm going to see if I can sweet talk any of the sages into starting for me too...

I found some more useful information on line at a university website the other day.
I have no idea who it was.
What they said is if the temperatures dont stay up to around 60F the onions will not form bulbs and it doesn't matter if they are long or short day onions or if the daylight is enough yet.
This explains why my onions are growing but not forming bulbs.
All the other sights just said when the temperatures warmed up and day length got long enough, not a good representation of any useful information.

My onions do all of the bulbing in about the last 4 weeks. The last two weeks you can almost see them swell!

Here is the onions at night for some reason you can see them better.
It looks like they may be starting to at least think about bulbing up.

They are growing great, Worth. Now they need a constant supply of moisture, and nutes, mainly nitrogen.

Here in ky, I grow mainly intermediate and long day varieties. I like to plant first week of April. Bulbing usually begins around the first of june, and is done by July first. The healthier you keep the plants for the first couple of months, the bigger the bulbs will be.

A crop of Candy onions from a few years back.. I had some that were 6 inches across. Made the most awesome onion rings ever!

They look great.
I water every other day real good and fertilize them once every other week.
Soon it will be every week.

They are right on track and looking good! I can't wait see what happens in a month or so.

Me neither, but I did something today that should liven them up even more.

I spread Ironite on the beads and sprayed everything down with vinegar and MG plant food.

I put 3 tablespoons of MG in an ortho dial and spray filled it with vinegar and set it on 6 oz per gallon.

My ph was running way high due to the city water and no rain.
I knew something was up when the lettuce in the back was out growing the lettuce in the beds and the peas weren't green enough or growing fast.

Yesterday after giving the onion patch a good flogging over night the sugar snap peas grew almost 2 inches I kid you not.
I should be horse whipped for forgetting to adjust the pH.:lol:
It isn't like it wasn't doing anything it just wasn't doing its full potential.

worth i wonder if its to late for me to start onions.ive never had any luck growing them they never bulb up for me.

This is the last of the last month to plant onion transplants here and expect anything most of the time.
You might get lucky.
I might not get anything.
Who knows, I do know they need control knobs on them.:lol:
If I do get lucky and get a good crop you know where to come.
Sweetest onions I have ever had came out of those two raised beds.
