Mark, that is just downright COLD.

HAIL storm in Nebraska in early March. It was 77 degrees. Talk about not normal weather.

All the babies were outside sunbathing. Mornings were still cold. Heck, the daytime high is usually 40. I had been carrying them outside for the afternoon for several days. Then out of nowhere a dark cloud appeared. I thought it was going to go north of me, and it did. I started taking the trays in since it was after 3 anyway. The sky quickly turned purple and it got COLD. Little hail the size of rice started falling. No problem yet I thought it would pass and the p;ants would get a healthy rainwater snack. I was taking in the trays slowly and setting them on their evening spots under lights. I GOT 4 of 20 TRAYS IN WHEN THE HAIL TURNED TO PEA SIZE with incredible force. It went on for several minutes.

Everything was damaged, broken off at the neck. I went to the front thinking the plants under cover of the stoop would be okay since they were protected by an overhang. No such luck - the storm came in from the south and the hail was flying sideways. Everything there gone - except .. I had covered a few half sized trays with domes since it was so windy. So they were saved!

I scooped up the pea sized hail from one tray , it took forever so I just whipped out my three heat mats and left them on full throttle to warm the soil. I left the lights on all night to see if any that weren't torn up or pulled out will go up upright.

Just got my son fed and off to work. Going to check for cole crop survivors. Needless to say starting over again now at least for half the tomatoes and peppers. I like to start early and trench so starting now technically I'll be at the "right" time.

I am glad you have time to replant. If that were to happen here, we would have to buy transplants.

I planted onions, kale, carrots, radishes, turnips and spinach this weekend... Nothing is up but my fall planted garlic. Last night I awoke to a 10 minute hail storm at 1 a.m. the wind was crazy. Haven't been to the garden today, but I'm guessing there will be some damage to the garlic leaves, hopefully it won't hurt it much.

Down here our early March weather is not as good as mid Feb weather.
But the days getting longer, the sun rising higher a temperature momentum is building up slowly.
It will be a while for the north to get warmer. Just hang in there. And yes, get busy planting your cool crops. How about them salad greens, peas, onions ... ? Man doe not live with tomatoes alone.:lol:

It's going to be 70 here tomorrow, and then 20 two days after that. I am thinking I will evacuate the greenhouse and not attempt to survive temperatures that cold.

we have 50mph screamers blasting through right now plus some snow that is creating really poor conditions outside. schools are closed, country roads are drifting in. i will be surprised if we don't lose power at some point. i saw some trees down on the way to and from work yesterday. not gonna be planting anything outside for awhile.
pepper seeds are going to get planted soon now along with some herbs i think.

i have a couple days off, and don't need to be anywhere. i'm staying put.
