Season-ending temps (around 30 F) are arriving tonight, but this afternoon my husband discovered a few ripe Sun Golds. I later found a bunch of peppers and tomatillos. We expected a killing frost about two weeks ago and picked loads of greenies, so today's bounty was a real Halloween treat!

Thursday, November 2, is supposed to have highs in the lower 90s here. That will shatter the high temperature record here by around 5 degrees. One forecaster said that this winter could easily be warmer than last winter here. Last winter only had 11 freezing times which is a hot winter here. That means a poor onion crop again. Onions need some freezing weather to produce larger onions. I may have to water with ice cold water. A warm winter keeps RKN and Fusarium happy and healthy - the last thing our gardens need.

5 yr anniversary of StormSandy...

We just had 48hrs of high wind and buckets of rain.
2am Sunday morning a tree came down perpendicular to the
garage doors, nailed a garbage can but not my Mini, :?:.

3am power went out. Fortunately we are 365days storm ready.
Took the day off, set up the genny and tested it, (we wait 8-12
hours before using the transfer switch). All is fine in daylight
hours. Home holds comfortable heat this time of year.
Skylights in bath, bedroom and kitchen.
(imagine if this was snow, yikes)

Power was back on just about sunset Monday.
A pre-season wake-up call to check the list and make those few
necessities handy.

Well... another sunny day here, very comfortable high in the 50's.
We had the warmest Halloween since 1954 - before I was born. So my warmest ever. :)
Here it is November 1st and I can still find flowers in the garden. It is so extraordinary, I had to share. And yes, they are a bit battered by frosty nights, but still....

Nice! I still remember a Halloween night in the '70's that had the warmest blustery winds. It was lovely.

I am still keeping flowers going for hummingbirds in areas under cover that used to house tomatoes and peppers. We have one sort of hummingbird that stays all winter so I stretch out their flowers to last as long as I can. Cuphea and salvias.

They missed the rain forecast for my area by 6" today. I'm at 6.5" of rain and it's still coming down. The 1st pic is the bridge onto my property and the 2nd is the garden.

That is getting to some serious flooding there. Be safe.

Rajun, that is a lot of water! Hope it recedes quickly and doesn't do too much permanent damage. I'm thinking I would rather have my much cursed snow! :dizzy:

I'm gonna have to make an appearance at the drainage department soon. The water is receding slowly, much slower than when we had 24" of rain in 24 hours last year. There're doing work on a two lane road and making it a boulevard and I think they blocked off some drainage somewhere because even when it got this bad last year the water drained within an hour and now it's been 5 hours and it's still higher than it should be.

What's worse is there's a strong diesel smell and an oily sheen on the water, I tracked it to the closest gas station(Texaco) and called 911. I'm afraid the diesel will kill the grass and contaminate the garden.

I had to walk across the bridge and check the depth so my Sister that lives next door can get home. It was right below my knee and I ended up driving us across. Good thing she drives an SUV.

NO, I don't believe in global warming! It's just a normal weather pattern that sets up and takes a while to get back to normal. It's been 25 years since a flood like last year and 3 years ago I had drip tape because we were so dry.

It's hot! The record hottest day at DFW airport in November was 89F in 2005. Not anymore. I just heard at a local airport near DFW it is 94F. It's 92F at DFW at 3pm and it will only get hotter by 5pm. They started keeping weather records here in 1898.

Surprisingly, it is snowing here today. About 1 or 2 months early. Some years we only get enough to dust a gingerbread house some time in the new year. We are lucky to get a white xmas with any amount of snow.

Probably won't accumulate much and be gone in a few days......hopefully. OTOH it would be nice to have a sudden cold spell put a definite end to things and send them into dormancy.

As soon as I see snow out there I want to add lights to enhance it in the night. We get the next time change soon, too.

I'm glad the snow waited until Halloween was over though there are quite a few pumpkins and decorations still up out there at people's houses.

I have mooses with my hollyhocks today. We had frost last night though - hoar frost on the ground this morning. I was glad I brought some veggies in yesterday.
