Double Helix Farms

Don't think I've seen anyone post about this new family run seed store so I thought I'd post a link to it. They have many interesting new varieties including some of their own crosses. I just received seeds in a matter of days of ordering which included a thank you gift. Shipping is free with a minimum order of $15.

Thank-You Kath for finding and sharing the Double Helix Farms website.
Very Nice, easy to navigate through and lots of useful information.
I kept the link in my IE favorites folder. They have a few varieties that I find very interesting.

Not to babble on, but in their "gardening tips" section (that is beautifully written) talks about not planting your seeds too deep reminds me of a similar story. My Master Gardener Training tells me to plant my tomato plants deep, a gardening friend Etta Fears a 94 y/o woman does the opposite. She cant bend over anymore so when she is ready to plant her tomatoes she buys a 4 pack pulls them out of their plastic cells and drops them on the ground and puts a shovel of dirt on top of them. Done. Of course we are all in shock because she is doing it ALL wrong but you should see her garden. Fabulous.
Etta Fears quote: My friends have canes and walkers and I have hoes and rakes.

I am not sure where this fond memory came from but you can feel the love when reading the Double Helix Farms gardening tips and other useful gardening info. Thanks Double Helix for jogging that memory.

I saw the link at another site, took a look and wondered if I knew Steve b'c of some of the varieties he listed, and posted that at that site, with actually more detail.

Before I could even get back to look at the rest of the site he called me, what a surprise, and we talked for over an hour. One of the subjects we discussed is whether one should list varieties with their English translations, or otherwise, and that b'c he had listed First Love, which is the English translation of Pervaya Lyubov which I've offered here in my seed offer the past couple of years.

He does have specialized training in genetics and I know is working on several breeding projects simultanously.

And I really must go back and read all at the site.:)

I love that site! Thanks for posting Kath.

I would've ordered today, but DH will be home alone for weeks and I cannot risk the eye roll...thinks I have "plenty" of seeds - perhaps even ENOUGH has escaped his lips...

So, I hope the selection rocks when I am home to intercept the mail!

salix December 8, 2011 03:47 AM

Gee, Kath - thanks a lot, you enabler you! No, I really mean it, the thanks that is. I wonder why we haven't seen it earlier? Interesting site, and yes, put in another order...

Granite26 December 8, 2011 11:38 AM

Well I had to try them out too :)

kath December 8, 2011 12:53 PM

Well, as Carolyn said, I saw it mentioned on another site as new and just up and running. Since I found it very well done and very interesting with beautiful pictures and many intriguing, new and tempting varieties, how could I not make sure that all of you knew about it, too?!:D 'Tis the season for ordering seeds!:cute:

And better you than me posting it here b'c as a Global Mod here I don't want to be seen as promoting any new particular seed site and never have except for calling attention to Adam's Gleckler's new site which someone before me actually linked to. I was just so thrilled to see the Gleckler name back in business for it has a long distinguished history going back to Adam's grandfather who started it in the 40's and then it passed to Adam
s father , whom I did know, and who did subcontract seed production for several well known seed sites including TGS. Before I discovered SSE the two best places to buy seeds from in the early 80's were Gleckler's and Seeds Blum.

Fact is, there are always those who will find something to criticize someone about something, and have done so and no doubt will do so in the future,so I look behind me as I travel forward.

And yes, I think Steve has done a terrific job at his new site.:)

:? Carolyn, is there a reason I shouldn't have posted this link? I don't know Steve and had no other reason to share this info other than to let others like me know about another source of cool sounding seeds. What's up? I don't read between the lines very well.:o

Yes I got a real chuckle out of that line also. There were other, more subtle, like the reference to politics and gardening not mixing. I think I love this guy

Kath, I thought I was reasonably clear as to what I said, so I'll say it another way, I'm glad that you posted the link to the site, I probably saw it before you did b'c I'm not exactly sure which other message site you refer to and it doesn't really matter.

And I went on to say that better you than me ( posting it), for the reasons I gave.

No reason to try to read between the lines b'c I think I was pretty straight forward in what I said, so I'll repeat it again, better you than me giving the link , and that, again, for the reasons I noted.:)

Well, I'm relieved that I didn't transgress any Tomatoville rules about promoting specific sites or anything, Carolyn. Your mention of criticism was confusing to me even after I reread the the post a couple times- thanks for clearing things up for me, though. ;)

Carolyn,

I hope the conclusion was 'no English translation of the names'!

Tania
Tania, I don't think there was a mutual conclusion but I do see his point.

Lets take what I know as Pervaya Lyubov.

One goes from the original name written in Russian to the translation of that to Pervaya Lyubov to the English translation of that to First Love.

He listed it as First Love, whereas I would list it as Pervaya Lyubov ( First Love)

So two translations from the original name in Russian.

I suppose each person who deals with names written in a language other than English has a preference as to how they then list or offer such varieties.:)

Wow- I love the bottom of the page with the different options for searching tomatoes - Maturity, Color, Size, Leaf Type, and Growth Type. Well done.

Yes, I did their spring show a couple of years (several years ago) to sell tomato transplants....When they started requiring the vendors dressing up too, I said enough is enough. I think he must get his costumes at a Branson, MO Thrift store!!!~!

OK....I love the website. It is very good and I am sure was much work to make.

Websites alone do not make a great source for seed. There are some very interesting varieties listed...always like something new and different to my garden.
I have now placed two orders. Second one is incoming and first one was shipped very quick. I will also add I asked some questions and got prompt answers.

For what its worth...moderators....I think Helix deserves a sticky!

Highly recommended.

good find, Kathy ! :)

doublehelix December 21, 2011 01:30 PM

I'm Steve and I am the owner of the website in question. I would like to thank everyone for all the kind words about Double Helix Farms.
The reason the website looks the way it does and functions the way it does is pretty simple. I love tomatoes and I love gardening. I have shopped on too many sites that did not allow me to easily find a tomato by type or color or leaf type etc. and then easily get back to where I started. At Double Helix Farms you can find those grouping on every single page. A lot of effort went into this feature. I'm really proud of how it looks and how it functions.

The whole layout of the website is based on my lack of self control for how many varieties I grow and being a total tomato nutt. :))

If anyone ever has any questions feel free to contact me.

-Steve

Holy cow, I can't believe there is a seed supplier so close to me! What a great selection. What is the best tomato for our heat and what is your favorite? (other than Sungold, because I already know all about that one :)))

Define close. Are you in Conway?

Standouts in the heat last year were Liz Birt, Plum Bush, Little Bells, Nefertiti and Mikado Black. Arkansas Traveler is good every year and there were a couple of hybrids that did well too. One of those was Spitfire. And yes, of course Sungold is a trooper.

Cherokee Purple, Bradley and Sungold always seem to make my top tomato list.

I had so many new varieties last year, it is just too hard to say. Picking a favorite is sort of like picking your favorite child. I have at least one favorite in just about every color.

Do you have a particular size or color in mind?

Thanks Keith! I am really proud of the uniqueness of the website and the varieties I am able to offer. I hope you spend some time looking through all the listings. There are a lot of tomatoes listed that will be new to most people.

I'm in Sherwood, about 1/2 an hour away.

I like smaller tomatoes and early because I'm impatient, taste is not as important as looking pretty! lol
Last year was a mess! It was either too hot or too wet. I don't grow the larger tomatoes well, they either just don't set fruit or when they do, they crack.
I also like smaller type plants, because I grow in containers.

DuckCreekFarms January 19, 2012 08:20 AM

pam

for early and smallish you could try Bloody Butcher. It was my first to ripen along with
Moravsky Div which look identical to BB to me....Both are smallish plants and would do well in pots.

doublehelix January 20, 2012 11:25 AM

Well for sure Sungold is going to be hard to beat for early and small.

For early, but not small, I had one last year that came in within a few days of Sungold. I don't know how it would do in a container but it is a tomato making machine in the ground. It is called Nugget. Not to be confused with the small cherry tomato Gold Nugget. Not the same, not even close.

http://doublehelixfarms.com/nugget

The tomatoes I grow for breeding purposes I usually grow them in containers. I have grown some large varieties and many of them do quite well. I grew Mikado Black both in the ground and in a container last year and it was pretty, healthy and tasted very good.

http://doublehelixfarms.com/mikado-black-tomato

If you want pretty, check out my avitar. That is one of the prettiest I grew last year. It is Vernissage Pink.

http://doublehelixfarms.com/vernissage-pink

I usually have a lot of extra plants. Since you are so close, you might want to check back with me in March and I will give you a few tomato plants to try.

What a surprise Steve. I was just reading at another message site where someone was asking about Sherrill and I know it well b'c I'm the one who got the seeds from I think her name is Maria Jacobs at DG and I think I SSE listed it but didn't check, and have been offering it in past seed offers here, as 2007 seeds, but ran out and didn't ask the guys to do more seed production on it.

So I was checking something at Tania's site and found that you're listing it for 2012.

Where did you get it from?

I'm always interested in where varieties I first found kinda ended up, if you know what I mean,

http://t.tatianastomatobase.com:88/wiki/Sherrill

And now back to packing seeds for my seed offer here.:)

mysidx January 21, 2012 06:50 PM

Nice site, the Nazca tomato looks and sounds very interesting. If I haven't already had so many seeds to plant already, I would check that one out for sure.

austinnhanasmom January 21, 2012 07:54 PM

Very nice website and lightning fast delivery!

Rare varieties -

WHO can ask for more??

Amazing!

Thanks Steve!
