Garden Buddy

I pulled this toad out of my pool back in August and let him go in my backyard. About a week ago he showed up in my side garden. He has dug himself a little hole where he hangs out, but he comes and goes.

I took this shot to document our symbiotic relationship.

:) it looks happy.

We have literally hundreds of Texas Toads this year. The really like digging hole around my tomato plants. It hasn't rained in a month so they dig wherever I water. http://www.herpsoftexas.org/content/texas-toad

I have no idea what kind of toads we have.

There seems to always one scaring me at night.

Nice shot! Your photo does an excellent job of illustrating how well he can blend into his surroundings.

I don't think this is the same guy as 2013, but he is liking the cool soil around a Nambe chile plant. I've got tomato volunteers sprouting all over the place from my compost.

Cool Photo, I've never seen a toad in soil. it looks much bigger than 2-3.5".

"The Texas toad is not a protected species in Texas and can be legally collected with a hunting license."

Who would "collect" such things? What for?

Garden Buddy is still going strong this year. He showed up back in May and is almost a daily visitor to the terra cotta dish I have to be sure to keep full of fresh water. There's another smaller toad around here too, and a large family of blue tailed lizzards. I wish the toads would enjoy eating snails.

We have some brown toads in the farm greenhouse this year... the camo of the browns against the soil is amazing. Nice to see your buddy having a cooler. :D

I love toads!

We have solar lights along our walkway garden and, for years, a big toad used to love to hang around underneath them to eat any nocturnal insects that were attracted by the light. Whenever I took my lab out last thing at night for her potty break, we would have to be careful not to step on her. We bought her a toad abode and placed it in a shady spot in the garden, but she never used it :(.

Just found this fella in the garden here today!!! :D I sure felt guilty for not watering. :oops:Have now made amends.

Lovely! Thanks for giving him a drink :). I found a small toad yesterday near the chicken coop. Thought he would be happier/safer in my veggie garden where I'm hoping he will feast on those darned cucumber beetles!!!!

This is a picture from a previous year. The tree frogs mostly stay up by the house where it is shadier and cooler and they have more pots to hide in. But this guy made it out to the garden and was going to help out with any tomato pests.

This little guy was hanging out in the mailbox a few days ago. It took him a good hour to leave.

GrowingCoastal September 6, 2018 10:49 PM

It must have sounded like a boom box with that little froggie in the mail box. Amazing how a wee peeper like that can make such a loud noise.
