STRIPED tomato varieties bred by:(Tom Wagner)

I am posting this as a STICKY since I have moderator duties [U][I]and [/I][/U]the topic is important to me and maybe to new, future, and entrenched readers on this forum.

Nearly 50 years of tomato breeding work with the supposed gs gene (Green Stripe) has brought forth countless numbers of beautifully striped tomato varieties. The starter gene came presented itself to from a partially expressed tomato clone found in a increase plot of the Ames, Iowa tomato collection....before it moved to the Geneva, NY location. Was it a mutation? Was it related to the much older variety Tigerella? I gave up using Tigerella thirty years ago since it was, frankly, inferior.

I noticed very early that my selection of the so-called gs gene was undergoing some radical phenotypic expression. The early varieties out of breeding work with the striped gene....Green Zebra, Elberta Girl, Banana Legs (Banana Fingers) Schimmeig Stoo, Schimmeig Creg, Green Nails, Brown Derby(striped version) Green Bell Pepper, and a few others started quite a "diaspora" especially with my issuance of my TATER MATER SEED catalogs starting with the 1983 premiere.

I kept breeding more and more striped tomatoes since 1983 and there is no way I can count all of them. Quite humbly, I can't explain the genetics of the gs gene. I am more of an artist than a geneticist! I save seed from what I like, and cannot profess to know everything that shows up in the progenies of my breeding experiments. I get stripes, streaks, dots, wavy zig-zag lines, dapples, shoulder stripes, odd colors of stripes, an so on.

Many folks have come forth with all kinds of stripes tomatoes that were accidental crosses, intentional crosses or later descendants of some of my earliess OP lines. The Striped Roman, Black Zebra, Copia, and Blush.....are but a few.

I will add to this list as I get time. I picked out a select group that shows a huge diversity. Enjoy!

Nice work Tom, any have nice taste?

gssgarden August 25, 2013 08:25 AM

Truly incredible!!

So pretty!!

There was a time where I was only interested in Reds and was afraid to even try an Orange, My Mom STILL won't eat a Green, now it amazes me what people have come up with!!

how many people ask you for seeds of Blauer Punkt?? Beautiful color!!!

Greg

Tom Wagner August 25, 2013 02:11 PM

Blauer Punkt is a new selection for me via the most interesting of 200 segregating plants in Austria. I left the seed in Vienna four years ago and this is a single plant selection made out of four plants at the Zanger Farm greenhouse in Portland, OR.

Blauer Punkt means Blue Dot in German. Did you see the blue dots? The dots look at bit different when the fruits ripen. The dot as a substitute for stripes is the point of interest for me.

ChrisK August 25, 2013 10:42 PM

That three-way hybrid is similar to what I had in my mind's eye for a cherry when I started crossing Dr. Carolyn to different striped lines. Very nice.

Jayc August 30, 2013 03:30 PM

Gorgeous!

Any way to fix the links so they embed in the post?

Lee August 30, 2013 10:02 PM

Yes, fix the [/IMG] part, so it's not part of the "link".

Only Tom or one of the global mods can do that though....

There are still a few of us (maybe I am the last?) who use a dial-up connection. :)Embedded photos require too much time to download, and make threads such as this impractical (impossible) to view. As an alternative, please consider going to "Advanced" -> "Manage Attachments", and then attach a click-able thumbnail photo.

Lee, all are clickable to me and some others who they were also clickable to, and if I delete the IMG part I'm not sure what will happen, so I'm not going to do it.

It's Tom's post so if he does it ASAP he can take any possible consequences, not me.:)

Let me add that Tom Wagner has lots of fans in France (tomatoes and potatoes) and they would like some information on taste.

Lee August 31, 2013 07:44 AM

Actually, I mispoke.... get rid of the link part, and they will all show inline. That's what the img tags do with the link.
Of course, that will make it challenging for the dial up folks.

Attaching the photos is another way, but can take a lot of work for many pictures such as this....

I was away from home for a few days and since picking tomatoes and potato berries and trying to extract seed as fast as possible. I am a novice at posting pictures as I use Imgur almost exclusively and not always successfully at that. I appreciate what the Tomadori site did. Here is another attempt at getting the pictures to be more easily seen. I don't have a clue what dial ups see.

I just don't have enough time to offer flavor descriptions...maybe when I list the seed later on this year.

Dear Tom Wagner

First of all "'I look at you like a Tomato Celebrities"" But I will try not to get all excited, because I don;t want you to run from me or my posting. I have been following much of your hard work over the years. My Customers and I Love all of your tomatoes. On other forums, I was not able to understand tomato breading: but I did realized breading is not hybridizing but making open pollinated varieties. I realist many years ago; My love of historical farming is just for farming ang not trying to understand the anatomy of tomatoes genes because of my difficulties of dyslexia. I tried for many years to understand the formularies, but its way over my head.

I order seeds from a seed vendor I like {Love} in 2006 where was a beautiful surprise in one package of seeds that produced a tomatoes that looked like "Casady’s Folly". I thought I found it this summer but, the tomatoes that grow did not look like this special Tomato. That was a conversational display. and good tasting too.

Can you help me find it?

This is the only tomato I can not replace from past hurricanes. I must find it again.

You've just posted in another thread that you found that there are sources for it:

[URL]http://tatianastomatobase.com/wiki/Casady%27s_Folly#tab=General_Info[/URL]

Actually several sources for it, so Tom can ignore kind of, what you wrote above,

Joyce, when looking for specific varieties the best place to go is to Tania's website and checkout sources. Of course if Tania is listing it, that's fine, but her site is a data base so she also lists other sites where a variety is sold,:)

Hope that helps,

Carolyn

Yes I am doing the happy dance!!! I did not have the name until reading Tom Wagner post. Tania help me replace a lot of my tomatoes and some how I missed the picture of this one on Tania's website. So I searched the history which lead me to Tania . I was so happy she still had them for sell. I ordered them from her.

I want to thank all seed vendors for trying to help me. But, It hard when you don't have a name. Thank God for Tania!!! I am so happy. Tell Tom Wagner He truly help me by posting his pictures and the name.

Mrs Carolyn this was the first time during a goolge search that Tomaville came up when looking for a tomato variety. You'all is doing a very good job. Out of all the vendors names Tina's was the one that I trust. But I did go to Tomatofest first because we are in the same growing zone; But they did not have the seeds or it did noyt come up in their search section. Will you be offering seeds for Glacial Zebra, Blauer Punkt, Roman Tapesrty, or Hyde and Seek this fall? I want 'me all! :-)

Striped tomato varieties

Hi Tom,
Your varieties are very impressive. I am getting back into the tomato gardening. I have just received some Indigo rose for Oregon state University and would like to know have you crossed any of those with your varieties.
sims_l22

NarnianGarden February 19, 2014 05:54 PM

Wow. Blauer Punkt is so beautiful - if the taste is anything close to good, it would be something to try it one day.

epsilon April 27, 2014 01:41 AM

Is blauer punkt in circulation? The striping and spotting and range of that blue is nothing short of amazing.

Also is that an Environmental or genetic anomaly that we're seeing on Embarrassing tomatoes?

Gaston

chalstonsc April 27, 2014 01:20 PM

Tom, it would help me to know which are dwarf, and/or small plants. Thanks.

Tom Wagner April 29, 2014 02:12 AM

[B]Blauer Punkt[/B] is not in circulation yet. I think I have it in my sowing lists but then it is but one of 843 kinds started this year. I have other blue dotted strains coming along to compare the dot patterns.

Someday I will get around to describing the striped varieties a bit....perhaps when I get an increase of seed to go along with the updated growth habits....ie....dwarf, determinate, etc.

IronPete June 10, 2014 09:32 AM

Very creative and beautiful tomatoes! I have ab accidental striped heart that I am trying to grow out. It should be in my avatar if I got that working correctly. It looks like Striped Roman but is probably a cross between my Red Oxhearts and a Striped Cavern that was nearby. Accidental but fun to grow out. :)

I think I saved my Green Zebra Tomato Plants from the Heat today.

Favorie de Bretagne

I'm thrilled to have seedlings of this stripey TW variety, which are gorgeously wispy and hairy and very compact: Favorie de Bretagne. Looking nice and early as well!

I wanted to ask Tom, whether you were selecting for any disease resistance when breeding this variety. I know you had disease resistance in mind in your work, as a general principle. I'm having a bad time with Early Blight when our summers get more hot and humid than they used to, and growing out some seeds from other breeders and mentors this summer, to see if there's a thread I can pick up to make my tomatoes more resilient to future climate.
IDK if you still visit TW, but I did want to thank you for your work and for all the inspiration and advice in your discussions here.

And TY for Favorie de Bretagne, which seeds have flown my way just when I needed to be inspired again. Looking forward to growing this plant.
