First ripe ones. 3 Gary O'Senas with the first ugly one just over 1 pound

Suze November 27, 2007 09:11 PM

Very nice - Manto and all, keep those brag pics coming!

Winding down here, getting cold. So I'll just start to enjoy the SH pics for now. :)

cottonpicker November 27, 2007 09:34 PM

manto....... Nice pics! Good sized fruit! Now that Gary O'Sena is in production, will you tell us your opinion? Taste?? Plant habit?? It's on my "grow list" for 2008.

Thanks..
LarryD

Mantis November 27, 2007 09:54 PM

Hi and thanks. Suze I think you sent me the GaryO seeds so thanks for that.
They are a vigorous plant that sets fruit really well and they are early for a big fruit as you can see.
They are prolific for me as well although this one and others have stopped flowering thru something I have done :(

Spatzbear November 27, 2007 09:59 PM

Lovely, Mantis! I like the look of this fruit. What are you going to do with them?
Please send pictures of meal and taste report! :cute:

tessa November 27, 2007 10:35 PM

gee manto...how early did you have to start again to get ripe fruit in november????

nice job!

Mantis November 27, 2007 10:47 PM

Greenhouse Tessa, greenhouse ;)

cosmicgardener November 28, 2007 12:44 AM

I take it the panic over wilt or blight or whatever is well and truly in the far distant past ;)

Grub November 28, 2007 03:08 AM

Good growing. You're still the man (to).
Always good to have you come in with these inspiring bombs.
Good fruit set here.

Mantis November 28, 2007 04:30 AM

Yes Cosmic, the leaf mould/blight/whatever has stopped and the fruitset has increased. I'm a happy Mantis.
Picked my first two Sungolds that were not even quite ripe. Crunchy and sweet. None of these will make it to the house , so if the wife and kids wish to try them, they can come down to the patch :))
Great to hear about the fruitset Grubo, hope you are keeping the blight at bay eh. Been humid up there by the looks of the weather sites

Grub November 28, 2007 05:16 AM

Too right, Manto.

It's November and every bucket, pot, wheelbarrow and container is half full of rainwater and, soon, mozzie larvae.

Really humid and some pretty severe EB all round... trimming daily... with the rain it's hard to spray anything.

Still believe in my observation and theory here: black and green-when-ripe types get black lesions from EB, whereas reds and pinks get the usual yellowing.

Also, thanks for Prudens Purple... very prolific by the looks of things.

cosmicgardener November 28, 2007 06:52 AM

Off to Hobbit Town for a coupla days - hope to see something ripe when we get back. This is the hottest November in Tas. that I can remember - no wind, no humidity, UV sky high. Snakes have woken up, two sighted so far, normally it's February before we spot any. No one is walking up the hill any more until the grass gets cut. Rabbits are rampaging so hopefully the snakes don't need to come into the garden............

Full Moon November 29, 2007 12:34 PM

Well done Mantis!

I'll take an ugly one any day I'm dying for a fresh tomato.

Rena November 29, 2007 03:24 PM

VERY nice!!!! (lucky you):cute:

Some smaller ones. Juanne Flammee on the left and my F1 of Juanne Flammee X Azoychka on the right. They both tasted great and very similar

First tomato in time for Christmas! IPB is the winner followed by a bunch of Kotlas about to ripen up. OUTSIDE IN TASSIE :)) And while we are bragging - check out the peas that we'll pick tomorrow and the spuds getting ready for Christmas day.

Spatzbear December 2, 2007 08:27 PM

Blimey the peas look good!

The ripe IPB looks as if it was waxed and polished! Well done! This is quite an achievement! Enjoy!

cosmicgardener December 2, 2007 09:23 PM

We just had 12 hours of heavy rain and the peas are popping. It's rain ( you know - that wet stuff) that makes them look shiny. ;)

Mantis December 2, 2007 09:32 PM

Rain, I dont beleive it. I reckon you have bought a can of Tomtrees special tomato wax :))

Spatzbear December 2, 2007 09:34 PM

Rain? Wet stuff?
Explain the concept of rain.

:dizzy:

It's a rare Tasmanian phenomenon. Goes with thunder and lightening - Dog thinks there's a big dog in the sky growling at him and has been living under the table for 24 hours.

mcsee December 2, 2007 10:40 PM

I'm currently germinating a few "smaller" varieties that I will use to boost my seed holdings for next season. As the crop in the hothouse moves out, these will replace them and will grow during Autumn, which is usually mild. With the remainder of December through until the end of March I should do O.K. with these late comers.

Spatz - We've just had a thunderstorm putting 11mm in the gauge.

cosmicgardener December 2, 2007 11:54 PM

Ah, but did you get a ripe tomato shining in the rain? :P

32ml since last night............Tassie Rocks! 8)

A couple of Toms Yellow Wonders

cosmicgardener December 3, 2007 05:47 PM

Yum - looks like you'll have plenty toms for Christmas. Can I put my hand up for some seeds of this one please? The more early fruiting varieties I can get the happier the locals will be.
Still drizzling, apparently it will clear tomorrow and rain again on Friday. The plants are growing like steam strains!

McSee, did you get hit with that torrential cloudburst in East Melbourne last night?

gssgarden December 3, 2007 06:22 PM

I assume that's 734 grams.
So that's a 1.61 lb TYW!! You must be a proud papa.
Am I right?

Can't wait to grow it!

Greg

mcsee December 3, 2007 06:33 PM

Cosmic - We only caught the lower edge of the less severe part of that storm. The radar had yellow and red areas covering over 100 sq Km, but it moved past us slightly to our East.

Spatzbear December 3, 2007 06:45 PM

Mantis, this is a beauty! Keep the pictures coming!

11ml and 32ml - you two must be happy! Enjoy the rain and its benefits. Still no rain here.

Mcsee, what smaller varieties are you germinating right now?

I am slowly starting to contemplate growing a few smaller varieties. Just so that I can get some into pots a bit earlier in the season.

mcsee December 3, 2007 06:58 PM

We ended up with 18mm as copped a second thunderstorm in the afternoon which gave us another 7mm.

Spatz - Currently germinating 'Polar Star' a cold weather variety from Alaska, plus 'Red Robin' I got from TGS with pathetic germination, 'Rio Fuego Nana' plus I'm playing around with a Romanian variety (Indet).

Plus a few late Peppers.
