Season starting in earnest

Csikos Botermo - heavy setting small cluster tomato

Blush from Fred Hemple

Maglia Rosa, also from Fred.

Yazon - supposed to be a small yellow/white variety but with the drought and intense sun it's definately yellow for me.

The first of the larger varieties to ripen more than a single token real slicer sized fruit is Magyar Piros Boker, a Hungarian determinate variety. I'll weigh some of these tonight to report on the actual size, they are pretty uniform, crack free and prolific, so I'm hoping they are tasty!

I am absolutely going to do cold treatment of my plants every year from now on. Almost every variety has set a decent amount of fruit lower than I have ever seen on my plants before.

RobinB July 9, 2012 03:38 PM

Nice! I'd be curious to see what your ripe Csikos Botermos look like close up. I grew this one last year and the shape was about right, but mine ended up being red with metallic green stripes. Not at all like the pictures! Your green ones look like mine did. Where did you get your seeds? Mine were from Baker Creek.

Boutique Tomatoes July 9, 2012 04:07 PM

The stripes on mine are orange and they look like the pictures on Reinhard Kraft's site. I'll take a close up tomato picture and post it soon, I ate the smaller one in the picture in a tomato salad for lunch today. :D

My seeds are from a trade with Geza.

clara July 9, 2012 04:23 PM

Mark, they all are looking amazing! Congrats - I'm green with envy! With our rainy lousy summer, only the 42-Days-Tomato is blushing at the moment. Okay, better one tomato than none! clara

PA_Julia July 9, 2012 04:39 PM

Mark,

Those are looking fantastic!!!
Very beautiful indeed!

Thanks! I have a completely different growing season than the past few years, figures that I would have eliminated almost all late varieties from this years grow list. Maybe this year I could have finally got somewhere with the Brandywines...:surprised:

kath July 9, 2012 06:42 PM

Beautiful pictures, beautiful fruits, Mark! I'm growing Blush, too, but none of them have yet.:cute::wait: It looks like some of the bigger fruited varieties from that group are going to ripen ahead of it.

Great photos Mark! The tomatoes look so juicy and appetizing!

I am so anxious to taste the varieties I'm growing this year. All new to me so it will be fun and interesting. I did cold treatment on my seedlings, but many still stubbornly refused to set fruit lower, including the Brandywine Croatia. Dang plant waited so long, but finally has some decent clusters. It will be a long time before they ripen.

meadowyck July 9, 2012 09:54 PM

Mark those are some really GREAT looking varieties of tomatoes, gosh I sure wish I had the acres to grow lots of tomatoes.

kee us updated on your first tastings.

babice July 9, 2012 09:59 PM

Mark - awesome results! When did you plant out? You're a 1/2 zone more north than I am...but you musta planted pretty early!? Yay for you!

tjg911 July 9, 2012 10:29 PM

those 2 from fred, blush and the other, have odd shapes. i never saw a tomato shaped like blush. nice pictures.

Boutique Tomatoes July 9, 2012 11:19 PM

Thanks everyone!

Babice, I planted most of them as 7 and 8 week old transplants the second week of May, about three weeks ahead of normal for my area. I was set up to have them all under cover, but with our warm spring I never had to.

Meadowyck, I think I finally have enough making it into the house to start taking some notes. Most of the early ones got tossed with some 18 year old balsalmic vinegar and EVOO for a salad within minutes of coming in and they all taste amazing when you've been suffering with supermarket styrofoam balls for so long.

Lakelady, I know what you mean about the stubborn ones. I have several varieties that are just shy to set fruit. One that I'm on my third year trying is Brad's Black Heart, last year I got one tomato. This year I have a couple set but I have other heart varieties planted a few feet away that already have 20+ fruit set. Since this year it looks like I'll have a longer than normal season so I'm hoping it gets better, otherwise it's not going to make a return in 2013.

Tom, another one like that is Trenton's Tiger from Brad Gates, but I don't think there are any ripe on that one yet. I had someone request unusual salad tomatoes this year so I grew 18 small colorful, unusual shaped varieties. They are different!

I didn't grow Csikos this year, but here is a photo of mine with metallic stripes from last year. Strange, huh? Yours looks like its supposed to! How does it taste?

How in the world do you pronounce that?

Strange, did you save seeds from that one? If it's not an environmental issue it's an interesting variation.

Taste is good, a bit sweet for my palate but most of my extended family prefer that. I like a little more acid bite.

You can plug the words in on Forvo.com, at least that's what I did. :)

Love the pics!

I didn't save seeds, but kind of wish that I had. It tasted good, and was pretty but it wasn't a great tomato. There are so many others to try! Maybe I'll grow the REAL Csikos Botermo next year with new fresh seeds.

I don't know how to pronounce it for sure, but I was calling it "see-kos bo-tehr-moh".

Robin

Thanks Remy! I know lots of my friends and neighbors laugh at me out there crawling around on the ground with a camera taking pictures of tomatoes and peppers every year.

"Chi-kos boo-ter-moo" is how it sounded from the native pronunciation of the two words on Forvo.

Makes sense since you've got the double dots over the double "o"s. I would write that as oe with the e upside down in my music score. (In my non-tomato "sparetime" I'm a vocalist and I have to sing in lotsa languages). I'll have to check out that Forvo website.

A few more today, having a lot of fun recording things this year.

Sweet Horizon/Rosalie's Early Orange

A fused blossom Vintage Wine

And a Hawaiian Red Currant

Most of the early ones have been catfaced, but more good examples seem to be blushing now.

I believe at least three of the blue varieties will ripen their first fruits in the next few days, looking forward to trying those....

starrywishes July 12, 2012 11:00 PM

omg! very fantastic mark!

Boutique Tomatoes July 13, 2012 09:51 PM

A pair of ripe Bing Cherries, another new variety from Tom Wagner. These are from a plant that Granite26 sent me a few weeks ago, it arrived in good shape with these two already set. I believe that the later fruit that are setting now are going to have event more blue shading to them. Flavor was good, I will definately grow this one again.

And a Blue Bayou. I'm starting to feel like if one of my neighbors watches me out there squeezing all these blue tomatoes every day they must think I've finally lost it with my tomato and pepper obsessions.

Randall July 14, 2012 07:28 PM

Great looking pics, Mark! Looks like you're having a good season.

babice July 14, 2012 09:07 PM

Is that Blue Bayou tasty?

Boutique Tomatoes July 14, 2012 09:55 PM

The first ones have been between a 6 or 7 on my personal scale, so good but not great so far. On a par with most of the smaller tomatoes I'm growing so far this year.

Granite26 July 15, 2012 01:17 AM

Love the pics!
... and geez my Bing Cherry have not ripened yet! I was expecting darker but maybe the later ones.

Boutique Tomatoes July 16, 2012 10:00 PM

If the birds will leave the ripening blue ones alone I should have a dozen or so of those to try tomorrow. Today was my first big harvest day of the larger varieties, we're starting to get into more serious poundage, last year it was early September before I was picking anything like this. Now if they'll just keep setting fruit!

looks fabulous Mark, congrats on a great tomato year!

I would think the birds wouldn't go after the blue tomatoes as I've read they usually go for things that are "red" fruits.
