Pomidor Paw
 

Hello All,
I am looking for this tomato. I have lots and lots to trade if anyone has it.

Has anyone on Tomatoville grown a tomato called Pomidor Paw and if so what was your opinion of it.

Karen, this tomato was very popular in Poland 30-40 years ago. Nobody is selling it now and I didn't find this variety at any forum swap.
I found only one information about Tomato (Pomidor) Paw: late, ind., pink tomatoes, pale pik flesh , oblate, juicy, tasty, weight 60-80 g, for fresh use and canning, tunnels or ground.
One of the garden forum members is writing about old Polish varieties and he found this description in an old newspaper.

Yesterday I googled it and got as far as Poland, saw the word pomidor, but I don't read polish, was going to contact some of our Polish Tville members, so Dorota, I'm glad you could share what you know.

Carolyn, "tomato" is "pomidor" in Polish. So you could find lots of informations about tomatoes. And the variety Polish name "Paw" means Peacock.

Yes,I knew from my googling that pomidor means tomato in polish, but I didn't know that paw meant peacock in Polish. Yes, I know peacocks, but now I'm curious. What's the connection between those gorgeous peacock feathers and a tomato variety?:)

Dorota, do you think it is likely that the tomato was open pollinated rather than a hybrid?
I am looking for seed for a person who has been generous with sharing seed with me. It is his holy grail of tomatoes and I was hoping to find seed for him.

Carolyn, I thkink, that is a kind of joke, game with words. I was googling later, and i found an information, that the first name of this variety, given by seed a company was PAF 182. "PAF" and "Paw" sound the same in Polish. So it could be that way.:DAnd Paw tomato appeared in the shops finally.

I just remembered that Gunnar, from Poland, is back with us, and if you look at this thread about language translations,you'll see that he posted there in September.

And I'm wondering what he might know more about this variety along with what Dorota already said. Maybe there's even a Polish Seed Bank still active, maybe Dorota knows or Gunnar does..Check out,I think, about post 51 or so,short term memory loss, it happens.;)

Andnow I find out that PAF is the name of the Polish Air Force.

I'm tryng to catch up here.

Dorota that's wonderful news. Do you know if they will be fresh seeds or older seeds, and if the latter Karen knows how to wake them up.

Carolyn, I am so excited too. I have never heard about this tomato before. It is very rare variety, almost nobody has the seeds.

Karen, the forum member, who will send me the seeds, said that they are not fresh, but should germinate without no problem. If you need an exact date, if it will help you to start the seeds, I will ask her how old this seeds are.

I have had no trouble germinating older seeds. I find tomato seed lasts for years stored. If the age is known that's nice to know but not necessary.

Paw (PAF 182) tomato is well-known in Poland.

I believe you can still buy it from the seed company PlantiCo.
They are still maintain its seed production.

P.S. We call a tomato POMIDOR in most Slavic countries :-)

Andrey, I found this web page too, when I googled for the tomato Paw. Unfortunately, this variety is not registered in the varieties register now, and as I know isn't sold by any seed company.

Dorota has a few seeds entire already. Thank you so very much!
As a side note, several people who participate in her garden forum in Poland are planning to grow it and save seed to revive this variety which used to be popular but has been sort of forgotten. That is wonderful!

Thank you so very much Dorota, I am very happy to have received your card and seeds today in the mail!
Of the 9 seeds I will keep 3 and send the other 6 to my friend so that hopefully between us will will be able to grow at least one fruiting plant to save seeds from. I will be certain to post in this thread if we are successful and will share seeds of it with others so that this once popular but now rare tomato is not lost. I hope you will also post the result of the growout of Paw to be undertaken in Poland by your group as well. Seems like a tomato worth saving and I am excited to grow and taste it (with any luck :) and some TLC of these older seeds).

I have one plant growing. Started out quite abnormal, one weird cotyledon and no normal growth tip. I was sad because it is so rare and I wanted to try it and save seeds. Normally I dispose of abnormal seedlings straight away but I kept this one to see what it would do.
