Mild ghost peppers?

So I ordered some Sweet Chocolate Ghost Peppers from Peppers By Mail that are supposed to be mild. In the past I've grow some "seasoning" peppers that were much hotter than expected.

Anyone grown these supposedly mild ghosts? Were they actually mild? I'll grow at least one, but if they really are going to be mild, I might put a few more in the ground.

Are mild ghosts real?

Hmmm... I've never actually met whoever runs the site, so .... maybe?

I've never heard of a Mild Ghost Pepper. Mild may mean 750,000 scoville units instead of 1 million+.

But it is on the internet, so it must be true.

Either way I've ordered the seeds, so I'll grow at least one seedling. But maybe just one in the garden, since I can only handle somewhere around Cayene at the most.

Can't wait to hear Worth's reaction to this one....

I read it earlier today at work.
Sort of speechless, I guess you could compare it to lite whiskey, all the flavor less alcohol.
Sort of a rip off if you ask me.

Oh yes I have a bottle of ghost pepper sauce I keep in the truck.
My co-worker keeps going to the truck and taking a shot.
I gave him a quart and a pint of it so far.

All kinds of Hybrid no heat for Jalapeno and Habenero ... Ghost peppers will be coming soon!

Once you start getting into the Superhots ... I just don't get the point in taking away the heat, they are NOT bred for their flavor. Plenty of mild, hots and sweets around to take care of that category.
:?!?:

Just to follow up on this thread and answer my original question. The Sweet Chocolate Ghost peppers are coming in well now and they are quite hot. Definitely not mild! I've never tried super hots, but this pepper is the hottest thing I've got going, significantly hotter than the scarlet lanterns growing next to it. So no truth in advertising, but that is fine. I have several folks I can give these to that enjoy the really hot ones and I'm using them in some of the hot sauces I'm making, so no pods going to waste.

I grew habanada this year.... Is there a puking emoji! ?? It has the worst smell and nasty flavor I have ever had. Puke puke puke.

zendog September 15, 2019 10:07 PM

Even though the Sweet Chocolate Ghost turned out very hot, I'm growing a couple other not hot types. One is a really lovely yellow habanero type that came as a random seed from a pack that was supposed to be something else. It doesn't taste much like a habanero though. I'm going to keep some seeds and see if it is true, but I have no idea if it is just a random cross or a stray seed from the seed company.

I also have a large red "sweet scotch bonnet" that is okay, but very much of the habanero flavor. I wouldn't grow it on its own again for myself although my wife likes them, but I think it is useful to add to a hot sauce mix of peppers when I'm trying to keep the Chinenense flavor but don't want it as hot.

I have 2 Ghost pepper plants from the same seed pack purchased last spring.
Plants are side by side and look identical. Fruit look identical.
One plant's fruit have 0 heat. The other's are HOT.
What gives?
I planted my left over 4 plants from the 6-pack I started in another area, and none of the plant's fruit are hot at all.
Weird to me.

I've definitely seen some variation across seedlings and I'm beginning to think a lot of sellers aren't isolating their plants for pure seed. That might be why my supposedly mild ghost is the hottest thing in the patch.

That said, I've also seen huge swings in the heat of peppers over a season. Are you letting them sit a while on the plant once they've changed color and fully ripened? I've found that heats mine up a bit more, particularly when it is as dry as it has been, so maybe see if the mild ones show a little more heat if you leave them on a while longer. Sorry you're having so many come out not hot.

Might want to save your own seed from the hot one it you like it.

The superhot pepper seed market is flooded with unintentional crosses and you are correct that most of the superhot sellers do not isolate (and will even say so), but people buy the seeds anyhow, grow plants, don't isolate those and then resell or trade those seeds - meanwhile you really have no clue what you are actually growing. It also seems it is common with the 'chili-heads' to do random purposeful crosses without really a solid method or recordkeeping.

Not fool-proof, but I try to only buy from reputable companies who promote isolation - but yeah, even with those accidents and mix-ups can happen or their suppliers could be unreliable with their operations as well. Not trying to offend any group, but people do not realize the potential damage done with cross-pollination and trading when they don't isolate and then trade/swap with others.

Another point of view is that everything is a cross anyhow - so it doesn't matter. But then again, a lot of us get upset dedicating valuable garden space for growing X or Y and it turns out awful and not what was expected at all.

I agree there is a lot of crossed seed getting sold and traded, often with people not knowing what they got was crossed to begin with. Even reputable seed suppliers often don't grow all their own seed, so I've gotten seed I later realized wasn't true from a few sellers I generally trust. I bough Chervena Chuschka seeds from a seller I bought them from 4 years ago and the peppers are definitely not the same as what I originally grew and loved 4 years back. It was a good reminder to isolate and save my own seed for the plants I like.
