Black Widow

Black Widow ... I'm glad I was wearing my gloves.
|
Black widow bites can be extremely bad. I think I live in the black widow capital of the world, and they seem to have an affinity for my house. This year has been especially bad. I've killed at least 100 in my house alone. Outdoors I just avoid them. Glad you had your gloves on.

Look or dont look under your lawn chairs every year I find black widows nesting in the crevasses.

I have a lot here too. Worth is right they love those plastic chairs.

When we moved to Texas we had a car shipped here. Hubby was washing the car real well because it had been in storage for so long that it had lots of spider webs under it. He discovered black widows on the undercarraige. We called the exterminator out to spray our garage and under the car. Exterminator said there were no black widows in Texas. I said, "well there are now". He did not want to treat the car so I told him if he did not do it I was calling someone else. So, he finally got up underneath there and saw about 14 of them under there. I don't think I have seen anyone move so fast in my life. We pulled the car out of the garage and he sprayed away, lol.

Ohh, that looks like a big girl, too, Salt. Good thinking on wearing gloves.
|
What exterminator would say there aren't any black widows in Texas?
There is one kind of them or another in almost every part of the world. Not all have the hour glass. Look it this one. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Latrodectus_tredecimguttatus_female.jpg Worth |

Yes, she was fully grown and as big as I've seen them in these parts. With the cold front coming yesterday, my anxiety was elevated already. When I found her - I took the picture and disposed of her nest and all. That was the end of cleaning the barn yesterday. |

I can't say that I blame you. I would panic and run too. :panic: |
I've sort of grown accustomed to them being around here. Ho hum another black widow over there in the corner. But I don't tolerate them in or around my house. The other day I was just reminding my hubby how we seemed to have less spiders and insects overall when we kept geese. There may be more geese in our future.
|
I would imagine we have them under our trailer houses here, but I'm not going to crawl under them to find out :lol:
It seems they like open places with somewhere to hide. The barn this one was in is an open-faced barn. I can't imagine having hundreds of them. wow |
I had one with a nest next to my bed in a crevice years ago, I didn't bother it and it didn't bother me.

Worth
Yeah, they are web spiders, not wandering spiders. So they like to stay put. BUT I had many patients who came into hospital with spider bites, mainly from black widows, who got bitten by sitting on an old chair or sticking their hands where they could not see. Save Save |
