Yay. How old are your plants?

Tracydr June 9, 2016 07:54 PM

Ichiban is a good one. Try it grilled or in green curry.

How exciting!!! You can also slice and stuff it in the middle before grilling, marinating, or broiling...it's amazing!

Bodhi Peace June 9, 2016 08:36 PM

Have you grown eggplant before?

Tracydr June 9, 2016 09:30 PM

Basil, tomato and eggplant soup is one of our favorites. I also do a lower cal version of eggplant Parmesan, roasting the eggplant without batter instead of frying with batter or bread crumbs.

Those were Bonnie sets I bought in early May. Hard to know when they were started, but I have had them transplanted in larger pots about 45-50 days. This is my first eggplant experience.

Bodhi Peace June 11, 2016 11:47 PM

Mine are transplanted almost 45 days too! 3 plants have flowers, 2 don't have any flowers.
What is a Bonnie set?

WilburMartin June 12, 2016 01:35 AM

A pre-sprouted plant ready for planting; my grandad called them sets - just stuck in my vocabulary.

Bonnie was the brand/company on the plant.

First fruit - fairly excited

Bodhi Peace June 23, 2016 09:02 PM

You stinker! Now you're ahead of me. My fruits havent pushed out past the calyx even though I got flowers first! Too bad you didnt get the eggplant in focus.

Must be hot where you are. It's 84 deg F here which is really hot for here.

My biggest fruit is my Barbarella.

You have just Ichiban variety? You have one plant?

Bodhi Peace June 23, 2016 10:53 PM

Tit for tat

I got some pics.

2 - Rosa Bianca

Nice looking plants/fruit to be

I have 5 Bonnie Ichiban plants - all have flowered; fruits have emerged on 2 with another 5 or 6 fertilized flowers. About 20 additional buds in total.

I also have 3 Black Beauty plants from Burpee seed. They are about a week behind - buds on two of the plants and a flower has bloomed in the last - about 15 buds between the three plants.

And yes - plenty of heat here: 96 here today!

Bodhi Peace June 23, 2016 11:20 PM

My eggplants would enjoy that temp, but I sure wouldn't!

Bodhi Peace June 23, 2016 11:23 PM

Are you seeing any dropped buds or unfertilized flowers?
My 'fairy tale' drops buds like crazy. But it also produces them like mad...

WilburMartin June 24, 2016 12:45 AM

I have not noticed any dropped buds - and a very healthy local bumble bee population fertilizes all of my plants, thankfully.

Bodhi Peace June 30, 2016 01:36 PM

How are your fruits coming along?
My biggest is my barbarella. It has one about the size of a small beefsteak tomato.

WilburMartin June 30, 2016 06:26 PM

I have harvested 2 Ichiban - about 7" each - and roasted them. They were so good!

I have 2 Black Beauty about to emerge from the calyx, and 6 Ichiban about to emerge from the calyx, too. Tons of buds on the Black Beauty and Ichiban plants - as long as I keep watering and harvesting regularly, I should have eggplants all summer.

Bodhi Peace June 30, 2016 07:57 PM

I wish you had a pic of those 7-inchers! I believe you though. ;)

this is two black beauties on the left in a recycled bag - each have set a fruit and have a bunch of buds

a pink brandywine in the middle

Ichiban on the right - I harvested the largest fruit above from this plant; has fertilized blooms waiting to set fruit

Bodhi Peace July 2, 2016 07:43 PM

I wish my leaves looked that green. Some of the bottom are yellow and some leaves curl up. I added fertilizers today and watered them in.

WilburMartin July 2, 2016 08:48 PM

Espoma - Tomato Tone; plenty of water; and intense South Mississippi sun - it was 100 today with 70-80 percent humidity

everybody's skin is brown and hydrated - I love my state, but the citizens have been led astray by the monied gentry

anyway - we do grow some lovely produce
