Mules aren't going anywhere. The GI's at work are always joking with me if they really are tomato plants and I tell them after I smoke one I'll let them know. Ami

Ted, all of the experimental BW selections I sent out are vigorous indeterminates. They all got to 8 feet or more in my garden!

PL6 Mule First blooms not viable

The mule finally tried to open a bloom, but I don't think this one will be viable. Other folks may see blooms similar to this in their gardens on any variety from time to time. The bloom is just not properly structured.

My mule has topped itself. It has tried to throw all kinds of blooms, but the flowers have a "wispy-brush like" appearance. I'll let it go a week or two longer, but I'm beginning to think it's a lost cause. The second picture shows where it was even trying to throw a "mega-bloom" (lower bloom).

Well, a nasty ole hornworm has messed with my RL4 fruit. Couldn't find the devil, but the evidence suggests it ate a lot of the tom and then tasted a bit of foliage and got a terrible tummy ache.

Still got two more fruit working on this plant. It was disappointing that the little devil picked the largest tom. Anyhow, this tom weighed in at 7.5 ozs (as is) and I thought I'd let Craig see the layout of the locules.

July 20 Update

Well, the mule died and was moved to the crap pile. Never did put out a proper bloom.

But the RL4 plant has sent us some ripe fruit. Here's the pre-slicing picture. I haven't cut it yet, but will do so in a day or so.

These two look delicious. Will save seeds and share some back to Craig after cutting.

I've got some fruit on the PL1 plant.

My PL6 plant has not produced a fruit yet. I continue to expect some (any time it gets ready). I still have 10 seeds of each to try next year if these are a bust this year.

Will update again in a couple weeks.

Craig,
Long time coming but here are pics of the PL 3 05-63 that I managed to grow. Only got one plant but it seems healthy and some what productive. Note the pic with my thumb in pic the small tomato has a pointed end. Don't know if the larger toms started this way or not. You can see the stripping on the green fruit. Too early to tell how visible the stripes will be when ripe.
Will send seeds and let you know about the taste later. Thanks for including me and your patience.

My update is also a long time in coming.

I had some trouble with germination of Pl3 05-63. I ended up with two plants that seem to be producing well. I don't as yet have ripe fruit but what is on the vines appear to be striped with heart shape.

Pl6 05-69 I have 5 plants with two ripe fruits at this point. My plant 1 is producing large bi-coloured fruit and plant 5 is producing large red.

I'm not quite sure how to describe taste but I'll give a try. Each of the fruits taste is distinct. The red has the traditional tomato taste before the sweet taste hits. The bi-coloured has a smoother sweet taste to it almost like Dr. Carolyn pink. We really like the taste of both fruits.

All the plants are loaded and we are just waiting for them to ripen.

My NcTom 05-58 is really putting out some nice sized fruit. Now all they have to do is get some color. Ami

nctomatoman August 14, 2009 02:02 PM

Hill, is that bicolor on a PL plant? What you probably have is something very similar to what I ended up stabilizing and naming Lucky Cross. Very nice!

troad August 15, 2009 08:43 PM

Craig,
Here are some pictures of PL 3 5-63 that ripened. I guess it does not have the gene for even ripening at this point in the grow out. It makes a very eye catching fruit.
On a scale of 10 it probably rates about 7-7.5 in taste. Made a nice salsa but more of the brandywine flavor needs to show up. The productivity is similar to what I expect from a BW.
The plant label in one picture is 5 inches long if that gives you any idea of the size of the tomato.
Am I correct in assuming further growouts may show different traits yet to be expressed?
All in all it has been a good tomato to grow healthwise etc.
Have seeds from this one fruit fermenting (which reminds me not a lot of seeds in the fruit). Shall I send seeds to you out of one fruit or wait until more fruit ripen and send a mix of seeds?

PS Hope the photo size is not a problem. Still a newbie at posting pics.
