Parthenocarpic Squash
 

[B]Anyone have any experience with parthenocarpic squash? I grew Nimba last year and had many fruit that were not pollinated properly and went to mush on the vine. I thought about trying this variety below from Vermont Bean.[/B]

Flesh is almost pure white with excellent flavor. Optimum size for picking is 6 to 8 inches long, but can be used when grown up to 12 inches

Nope. I've seen summer squash which could attain a usable size, without pollination, and before going to mush. But this sounds unique to me.

I don't have experience with parthenocarpic vegetables but a friend grows parthenocarpic cucumbers regularly and is very happy with them.

I've grown Parthenon a few times and was satisfied with them. They do seem to suffer from rot more than others, but a handful of dolomitic lime at the time of planting seems to help a lot.

I was going to buy Partenon from Territorial Seed Co...but when I saw that they wanted $7.95 for ten seeds...I said forget that.

I may try Sultan from Johnny's...I need some other pole bean seeds.

Mark, I have a couple extra Parthenon seeds I got from Thompson & Morgan last year. As far as I can tell, they're virtually identical to Partenon, so if you'd like to try them, let me know.

Still considering placing order with Johnny's...but I find that my order of two beans and the squash will put me at just over the $10 mark...and Johnny's want $5.95 S&H for anything over $10...so my three pack of seeds go to over $5 per packet.:evil:

There are bees in my area, but they're not "morning people." They usually wander in around lunch time, and by then the squash blossoms have started to close.

I grew Sultan from Johnny's last year under rowcovers. It produced pretty well for me . I would grow it again.

Well, I ordered my Perfect Pick Hybrid Squash seeds, so I hope I'll get me some sqaush this summer.

I got the perfect pick this year too. The package said to start it ahead a time in pots. They sprouted nice, I transplanted them and they got puny. I started more seeds right in the garden. The new ones look tons better than the transplants but we had some wierd spring weather here in Georgia this year so I am hoping to actaully get some squash! Last two years I got nothing but huge leaves and flowers :( I hope this works!
