Top and bottom peppers are usual size,but one plant had stretched out versions.
From saved seed.
I wonder if the plants are reverting back to their origins.

Ha! Glad someone is growing Peters. I have to say, though, that yours aren't particularly rude. Not enough to scandalize the church ladies.

Peter may have a tendency to cross or the current batch of seeds in circulation could have crossed in previous generations. It could a statistical anomaly, but about 25% of my plants have shown abnormal phenotypes and pods. If I grow Peter again, I will be sure to start at least four plants and wait to see that pods develop.

From saved seeds and the plants were in the middle of tomatoes in virgin soil.Also had 4 plants but only 1 had excited peppers.The original seed was from bought plants and were significant shrinkage type.

So of four plants, only one showed semi-rude pods? I'd say that the parent is to blame. I wouldn't use any seed from them. Try to source from a different place.

I think you just came up with a solution on how to tell if a pepper is hot when the label fades. Better stop here.

I have grown them a couple of times. I guess that long ago someone with way too much time on their hands must have selected for shape.

I haven't been able to find much on the origin of the Peter. Maybe there's some truth to the rumor that it first appeared in the Garden of Eden.

the long ones are easier to stuff.
I use hot chili with no beans for a "make you cry twice" hot pepper experience.
I will grow seeds from the long ones along with the traditional to see what next year brings.

Word is that they were first reported by one of the Texas ag stations, and are considered to be "native" to central and south Texas and northeastern Mexico.

My impression is that they aren't stable enough to have a long history. Best guess is that someone found a naturally occurring variation and "encouraged" it, but never really stabilized it.

Frankly, other than the pod shape there's nothing special about the pepper. I did get one sport that smelled like roses when you opened a pod, but we couldn't replicate it in the next two generations, and the mother froze off in the moving van. Free seed if anyone's interested.
