A sweet corn bed was prepared by fertilizing with compost and some Urea(Nitrogen). The rows were marked with boards and the area was covered with mulch.The corn seeds are now being soaked until they sprout then will be planted under the boards. The boards serve two purposes. They keep the seeds damp and prevent birds from stealing the seed corn. The corn chosen is Seneca Arrowhead and Seneca Horizon. About 80 plants will be grown. A small patch should be relatively compacted as shown to have good pollination as opposed to row growing.

That's interesting. Do you plant pole beans 2 weeks after the corn sprouts? In kind of a modified 3 sisters method?

No. I only need about 16 feet of beans. Eight of green and eight of yellow. Usually bush beans. The green are spouting now.

Thats a nice setup you have there. The last few years, I have actually started the corn in 72 cell trays and transplanted it because of the high prices for seed. I usually grow about 130 plants a year and am still using the same 1/2 lb bag for the fourth year.

I find sprouting corn on paper about 48 to 72 hours insures germination befpre planting outdoors. The board discourages bird from eating the seed, also the small green shoot, when it first appears. I can/juice the corn.

Corn is in season now.It is of the highest quality. Cost is six dollars for 14 cobs if you have your own bag. Eighty four cobs were processed into 22 litres of juice.Twenty one litres was pressure canned at 15 PSI for 15 minutes for long term storage and one litre was placed in the refrigerator for current use.Some peppers,okra and egg plant, since they were available from the garden, was added to the cooking pot.Water was added to make the product liquid enough for drinking. Each litre of juice contains 3.8 cobs of corn. Annotated photos depict the process.

About 50 kernels of Seneca Arrowhead corn was planted using the board method. The spacing was about eight inches under a raised board.The kernels were starting to sprout covered in a wetted Kleenex. Some kernels have not sprouted so will be given more time and planted later.The planting board was raised slightly with cross pieces, and will be removed when the plants emerge.

Wind and rain damage
 

Storm, (wind and heavy rain) on 19 July 2013 flattened about half my corn. It was necessary to give about 25 plants a stick to support the stalk. Often the stalk broke when moving to the vertical.

If the stalks were flattened because of the soil turning to mud, they will often right themselves in a few days if left alone.

A few cobs of corn were harvested.About half the plot was damaged by heavy rain and wind about a week ago.Quality is good and about 60 cobs will be harvested.
