Is this event going to happen again? I hope so. Even though I had to leave early, I still had a great time.

So who's in?

I sent Morningsun Herb Farm an email requesting the date of their tomato tasting event. Hopefully, they reply soon. I also put in several calls to them, but the line is always busy.

If this a definite event, we should let the people on the other website know, especially on the tomato and California Gardening Forums. There are a lot of people that only post on the CA forum that live in the Sacto area that would be interested in this event.

Barb, thanks for creating this forum and taking the lead.

Okay...I gave another call to Morningsun Herb Farm and got a reply. :D Their event is on Sunday, August 26th. Saturday, August 25th seems like a good day to hold NORCATT. This date will allow the out of town people to attend both dates. Please share your opinions?

I am in Roseville. There are a lot of very nice parks in Roseville. That said, I am pretty flexible about the location. Please share your thoughts on where we should have this event.

For those of you that attended last year's event, please chime in. Did you like the location where we had the event last year? Was it centrally located?

Do you think that it would be a good idea to post a link to this page in the GW California forum. There are a lot of people the Sacramento area that post in that forum.

Correction: Morningsun Herb Farm Tomato Tasting event is August 27th. See response from Rose Loveall below. I guess our event should be on Sat., August 26th.

Hi Angelique, the date is Sunday, August 27th, 11 am-3 pm. Seems a long way off, but we are busily planting seed now to start selling plants in mid March, and of course, to plant our test field.

Is the same park, Gibbons Park, good for everybody? It is in the Fair Oaks area of Sacramento.

Sure, I'll make the reservation for the park. How long do you think we will need it? When should we start? How many people do you think will show up?

I cannot remember what time we arrived, but there were others already there. Do any of you guys remember the start time? It seemed we could have used more prep time, as it took so long just to organize and cut the tomatoes. I sure do hope janice can come and do the labeling. :)

My guess for time would be 10:00 to 3:00. Any other suggestions?

We had around 10 people last year. I sure do hope we get more this year. There were just SO many tomatoes left over.

Thanks for letting me know about this years tasting C-Barb! I'll be there, I really regret missing last year, although is was (still) is the weekend for me before school starts. I'll just HAVE to have my classroom prepared before hand, that's all there is to it. :)

I'm in and I'm starting most of my tomatoes about a month later this year. They were all begining to give out about the 2nd week of August, just before for the last tasting. :cry:

And....YES on the zuke casserole, it was great.

It would be great if Janice (Janice, was that you who did this?) could please post the list/results of the 2005 NORCATT tasting. I know we'll all be bringing new varieties this year and it would be interesting to compare.

That sounds like a fun event BUT I wouldn't want the tomato tasting to turn into something where we are hosting a tasting for the public in large numbers. That would be too hectic. I preferred the nice, leisurely pace we progressed at last year...especially getting the BLT's. :wink:

This might be too busy a venue to have our gathering at. Let's see what kristy says. And I'm going to check with my sis to see if she has ever attended Harvest Day.

I'll check into using the facilities at Fair Oaks park on August 26. Though I've never been to Harvest Day, I do imagine that your fears that we may be engulfed by lots of other people could be well founded. I'll ask about it anyway, to get an idea of how busy they expect it to be.

Angelique, it looks like there are some nice parks in Roseville but I can't find the reservation prices on the City of Roseville's website. Do you want to call and find that out? Mission Oaks' facility rental was more affordable than the facilities available from Fair Oaks, or Carmichael park districts the last time I checked. Most importantly, the others offered reservations on an hour by hour basis rather than giving us the day, so we'd be put on a tighter time schedule for setting up, enjoying BLTs, etc.

I'm open to going wherever is most convenient for everyone. If you do want to do Gibbons again, the park office is on the way to my daughter's school so I can drop in and fill out the forms pretty easily.

What about a seedling exchange (and potluck?)in about mid April? Is there any interest in that?

This is my first year that I have started from a seed. I started way too early (Jan. 10th). I don't think that my seedlings will be up to par with everyone's expectations if we meet in April. I would still love to meet up for a pot luck and learn from those of you that want to exchange. I will be out of town the weekend of April 8th and 22nd. The rest of my weekends in April are available.

Ooh, Davis would be nice, and slightly more central. I'd go for Pioneer Park. It does say that out of towners pay double for site rental. Would that be a problem?

Since I'm 'in town', if you decide to do it at Pioneer, I can take care of being the townie that rents, in case there is something about doubling for out-of-towners! There are many very nice parks here in Davis. Pioneer is one of the quieter ones.

I'd be interested in a seedling exchange, but mine are so big already! I'm hoping they'll last in their peat pots for 3-4 more weeks when I plan on putting them out, with milk jug at the ready...

My brain says no but my taste buds say yes. I've agonized with cuts and adds for the last 2 weeks. I hopefully won’t take any (I’ll have to find space) but I can adopt out my backups\orphans if anyone is looking for a variety I have. If we have this event and you really, really want something & are counting on it, e-mail me in the next week or two and I’ll be sure I have one for you. I sowed most of them yesterday.

Sakai Ichi is from ’90 and is really making me work hard at getting a plant. That’s the only one I’m pretty sure won’t be among my extras, but who knows. Been working on that one for about 2 weeks now.

For the actual tasting the only suggestion I would have, which I think would save the most time, is have someone print out the tomato variety \ growers name tags in advance. They would all be on identical paper-stock of the various colors and could be snail-mailed and filled out in advance. That was very, very tedious to do on the day of. :?
