Wow. So is this event going to happen again? :-)

Hi All,

Is this event going to happen again? I hope so. Even though I had to leave early, I still had a great time.

So who's in?

I sent Morningsun Herb Farm an email requesting the date of their tomato tasting event. Hopefully, they reply soon. I also put in several calls to them, but the line is always busy.

If this a definite event, we should let the people on the other website know, especially on the tomato and California Gardening Forums. There are a lot of people that only post on the CA forum that live in the Sacto area that would be interested in this event.

Barb, thanks for creating this forum and taking the lead.

Cheers,

Angelique

angelique February 17, 2006 04:45 PM

Okay...I gave another call to Morningsun Herb Farm and got a reply. :D Their event is on Sunday, August 26th. Saturday, August 25th seems like a good day to hold NORCATT. This date will allow the out of town people to attend both dates. Please share your opinions?

Cheers,

Angelique

landarc February 18, 2006 04:46 PM

Seems like a good plan to me. Maybe then Barb can make her pilgrimage (Sp?) north again too.

Hi All,

I am in Roseville. There are a lot of very nice parks in Roseville. That said, I am pretty flexible about the location. Please share your thoughts on where we should have this event.

For those of you that attended last year's event, please chime in. Did you like the location where we had the event last year? Was it centrally located?

Do you think that it would be a good idea to post a link to this page in the GW California forum. There are a lot of people the Sacramento area that post in that forum.

Cheers,

Angelique

angelique February 21, 2006 03:14 AM

Correction: Morningsun Herb Farm Tomato Tasting event is August 27th. See response from Rose Loveall below. I guess our event should be on Sat., August 26th.

__________________________________________

Hi Angelique, the date is Sunday, August 27th, 11 am-3 pm. Seems a long way off, but we are busily planting seed now to start selling plants in mid March, and of course, to plant our test field.

August 26th sounds good to me. You gotta love back to back tomato tastings!

Is the same park, Gibbons Park, good for everybody? It is in the Fair Oaks area of Sacramento.

And should I have my sister bring her zuke casserole again?

angelique February 22, 2006 01:49 AM

Gibbson Park sounds good to me. Your sister's casserole was fabulous.

coronabarb February 22, 2006 07:25 PM

Okay, so we're looking at August 26th at Gibbons Park. I'd like to get an idea of who all is interested in coming to the event this year. GTG, you came last year, didn't you? I'm so sorry, I have forgotten your *real* name... forgive my forgetful brain...

angelique

gtg

bruce? brad? Are you in? I have contacted kristy and janice as well.

Angelique, can you make the contact to reserve the park? I remember that there was an expense for that. We can pitch in and cover the cost, right guys???

angelique February 23, 2006 12:41 AM

Hi Barb,

Sure, I'll make the reservation for the park. How long do you think we will need it? When should we start? How many people do you think will show up?

It is 75.00 a day to rent the park facility. Here's a link just in case any has any questions about the location. http://www.morpd.com/rentals.asp The area is covered with 5 picnic tables.

Cheers,

Angelique

coronabarb February 23, 2006 01:33 AM

Good...a link to the park.

I cannot remember what time we arrived, but there were others already there. Do any of you guys remember the start time? It seemed we could have used more prep time, as it took so long just to organize and cut the tomatoes. I sure do hope janice can come and do the labeling. :)

My guess for time would be 10:00 to 3:00. Any other suggestions?

We had around 10 people last year. I sure do hope we get more this year. There were just SO many tomatoes left over.

vermiit February 23, 2006 02:08 AM

Hi,
Thanks for letting me know about this years tasting C-Barb! I'll be there, I really regret missing last year, although is was (still) is the weekend for me before school starts. I'll just HAVE to have my classroom prepared before hand, that's all there is to it. :)

chilhuacle February 23, 2006 08:36 AM

Hi Barb, Angelique and all,

I'm in and I'm starting most of my tomatoes about a month later this year. They were all begining to give out about the 2nd week of August, just before for the last tasting.

And....YES on the zuke casserole, it was great.

GreenThumbGal_07 February 23, 2006 01:25 PM

Wow. So is this event going to happen again? :-)

It would be great if Janice (Janice, was that you who did this?) could please post the list/results of the 2005 NORCATT tasting. I know we'll all be bringing new varieties this year and it would be interesting to compare.

Thanks.

coronabarb February 23, 2006 01:40 PM

I don't know if janice is a member here. I have emailed her to see if she can come out. That list fell over the falls at the *other* place. Bruce, do you still have that?

chilhuacle February 23, 2006 02:00 PM

Hey Barb,

The list is still there if anyone wants to zip over to the GW tomato ghost town and have a look. It's mighty quiet over there, tumbleweeds blowin' down the streets, sounds of the occasional footstep. The link is at the bottom. I'll put it here to save you a trip.

Hi Group,

Here is a link to the latest post from Kristy on GW.

http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/tomato/msg0813354311032.html?28

She is looking into another location that might be free of charge on August 5th. I asked her to see if this location is available on August 26th.

Since I am very local, I am flexible about the date and location. Please chime in with your thoughts.

Cheers,

Angelique

coronabarb February 24, 2006 01:19 PM

I am glad kristy sent a reply. I need to get that girl over here.

I am flexible as to date and location. Let's see what she comes up with. A veggie tasting sounds intriguing.

angelique February 24, 2006 01:33 PM

Hi Barb,

Here is a link to the Harvest Day at the Fair Oaks Horticulture Center. I have never been to this event. However, I did put this on my calendar quite a while ago.

Cheers,

Angelique

coronabarb February 24, 2006 02:01 PM

A,

That sounds like a fun event BUT I wouldn't want the tomato tasting to turn into something where we are hosting a tasting for the public in large numbers. That would be too hectic. I preferred the nice, leisurely pace we progressed at last year...especially getting the BLT's.

This might be too busy a venue to have our gathering at. Let's see what kristy says. And I'm going to check with my sis to see if she has ever attended Harvest Day.

angelique February 24, 2006 02:40 PM

Hi Barb,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Actually, on GW, I asked Kristy if she could see if the Horticulture Center facilities are available for August 26th (for private use). Please let me know if Kristy replies to you.

Thanks.

Angelique

coronabarb February 24, 2006 07:06 PM

kristy has signed up here...we should be getting input directly from her now. :)

kristy February 24, 2006 07:49 PM

aha, now I know why my ears have been itching. :)

I'll check into using the facilities at Fair Oaks park on August 26. Though I've never been to Harvest Day, I do imagine that your fears that we may be engulfed by lots of other people could be well founded. I'll ask about it anyway, to get an idea of how busy they expect it to be.

Angelique, it looks like there are some nice parks in Roseville but I can't find the reservation prices on the City of Roseville's website. Do you want to call and find that out? Mission Oaks' facility rental was more affordable than the facilities available from Fair Oaks, or Carmichael park districts the last time I checked. Most importantly, the others offered reservations on an hour by hour basis rather than giving us the day, so we'd be put on a tighter time schedule for setting up, enjoying BLTs, etc.

I'm open to going wherever is most convenient for everyone. If you do want to do Gibbons again, the park office is on the way to my daughter's school so I can drop in and fill out the forms pretty easily.

What about a seedling exchange (and potluck?)in about mid April? Is there any interest in that?

angelique February 25, 2006 02:04 AM

Hi Kristy,

Barb seemed to think that Roseville might be out of the way, since a few members are coming from the bay area (Landarc, GreenThumbGal, and Chilehuacle). A member from the GW CA forum suggested Pioneer Park in Davis. Here is a link.

http://www.city.davis.ca.us/pcs/download/picnicareas.pdf

Let me know if you still want me to check out parks in Roseville. I called them last Monday, but it was a holiday. I'll try again.

Hopefully, we can reserve the Fair Oaks Hort. Center on 8/26 at a discounted rate. I have been by the adjacent library. The center seems fairly private.

This is my first year that I have started from a seed. I started way too early (Jan. 10th). I don't think that my seedlings will be up to par with everyone's expectations if we meet in April. I would still love to meet up for a pot luck and learn from those of you that want to exchange. I will be out of town the weekend of April 8th and 22nd. The rest of my weekends in April are available.

Thank you so much for your help.

Cheers,

Angelique

kristy February 25, 2006 03:28 AM

Ooh, Davis would be nice, and slightly more central. I'd go for Pioneer Park. It does say that out of towners pay double for site rental. Would that be a problem?

vermiit February 25, 2006 11:47 AM

Since I'm 'in town', if you decide to do it at Pioneer, I can take care of being the townie that rents, in case there is something about doubling for out-of-towners! There are many very nice parks here in Davis. Pioneer is one of the quieter ones.

I'd be interested in a seedling exchange, but mine are so big already! I'm hoping they'll last in their peat pots for 3-4 more weeks when I plan on putting them out, with milk jug at the ready...

coronabarb February 25, 2006 12:06 PM

vermiit, thanks for the offer...I thought there was someone here from Davis. :)

kristy & angelique, you guys decide...I'm fine with Davis, such a lovely town. We took the tour of UCD in 2000 w/my son.

chilhuacle February 25, 2006 03:55 PM

Hi all,

Re: The plant swap.

Davis would be sooooo nice! I hope that works out.

My brain says no but my taste buds say yes. I've agonized with cuts and adds for the last 2 weeks. I hopefully won’t take any (I’ll have to find space) but I can adopt out my backups\orphans if anyone is looking for a variety I have. If we have this event and you really, really want something & are counting on it, e-mail me in the next week or two and I’ll be sure I have one for you. I sowed most of them yesterday.

Sakai Ichi is from ’90 and is really making me work hard at getting a plant. That’s the only one I’m pretty sure won’t be among my extras, but who knows. Been working on that one for about 2 weeks now.

For the actual tasting the only suggestion I would have, which I think would save the most time, is have someone print out the tomato variety \ growers name tags in advance. They would all be on identical paper-stock of the various colors and could be snail-mailed and filled out in advance. That was very, very tedious to do on the day of. :?
