Besides tomatoes, I love roses. Ok I love most anything that grows.:lol:

Wow, Remy! Those are breathtaking! My favorite is that big, fat white one. All your foliage looks so nice and healthy. I just cleaned my roses up yesterday and they're not nearly as happy. I don't know what any of them are. The previous owners planted them and my husband bought this house 15 years ago so they've been here a while. They take a back seat to the veggies but I do what I can to maintain them when I get a chance.

Just beautiful, Remy - in my next life, given a hospitable climate to do so, I'd love to get more into roses. We've had several in our Raleigh garden, all but one now gone (Graham Thomas, English Garden and Winchester Cathedral, all Austins (WC lives on), and a few historic ones - Alfred de Dalmas (moss rose, aka Mousseline), and Jacques Catier, a damask - incredible fragrance on that one.

Thanks! I think you're lucky to have bought a house with the roses, but it is a lot of work. I am nuts with trying to take care of things.:lol: I am lucky though because I don't have to spray for foliage diseases. A former owner of my house liked to garden and pretty much the only garden remnants were a few roses that did pretty good without care, so that really got me into it.

I know it is a lot harder to take care of them down your way. I've been there in the humid heat of summer!
That's good to know that Winchester Cathedral is a tough rose. Marchessa Boccella is often thought to be Jacques Cartier and Marchessa does smell great too, but I'm not so sure they are the exact same rose. I have a mini moss, Dresden Doll, but I still do have to acquire a full sized version. I've always loved pics of them.

Thanks! Besides all the pruning, I really don't do that much for them. I do believe in the $20 hole for a $2 plant(prices really should be increased since the time I learned that.:D) So I dig a large area and amend the soil well. The first few years I fertilize once in awhile with epsoma rose tone or fish emulsion, but once they are established shrubs, I just put compost/manure down if it seems like they need it.
I don't spray for foliage diseases. I try to pick out roses that are winter hardy and known to be disease resistant. I do use insecticidal soap for all the aphids, but otherwise, I sort of have a survival of the fittest kind of garden.:D
