Pretty cool Basil -

I planted out 100 (at least) seeds of Napolitano Basil and of course 100+ popped up - but I took this picture as there is an "oddy" in the bunch!

I know there are varieties of this color - but thought it was cool:

Very neat. I can taste that basil now. Are you going to let the purple one go to seed?

Tomstrees April 10, 2008 02:20 PM

Bearing any challenges, without a doubt I'm letting that lil plant go to seed!

Would be pretty cool if it had the foliage of Napolitano but purple -
oh I love "what if" projects...

Tom, I grow Basil Valentino which is a lettuce leaf type. Also have some traditional basil which seems to be a bit tougher.

Young seedlings

Lomita--how is the flavor of Valentio? As strong as some of the more 'traditional' basil? Sure is pretty! :)

What a cute basil!!! For sure I'd save the seed! :D I love a trip away from the norm:yes: It adds spice to life!! and the garden!

I've grown purple colored basil...would have to check the seed packets for the name. It is very beautiful, especially when put in vinegar.

jungseed April 16, 2008 01:55 PM

My guess is Red Rubin basil. purple leaves and lavender flowers. you'll have to let us know what you come out with.

Lomatia April 16, 2008 06:14 PM

I believe that the large leaf is not a strong as the traditional. The big leaf form can be used to wrap up bocconcini.

Thankfully we're past being transplanted and separated from the "bunch" ... Need to post updated pics, but the purple basil is showing true leaves now and look even cooler!

I also got 4 varieties from the USDA that I am growing.
