I know it is not a tomato

None of the other forums seemed to be the right place so I am asking here where there should be a lot of eyes on the picture. Every year there are some of these carrots that grow right next to normal tapered ones.Any ideas why?

Variations in weather conditions, moisture and temperature fluctuations cause most of the strange growth patterns. Kind of cool I think.

That's strange. It's kind of like they started growing OK and then something made a constricted area before they resumed growing again. The puzzler is why it happened when normal carrots grew right beside them.

Carrots don't like weeds. If there are weeds among your carrots, I'm wondering if weed roots kind of strangled some of your carrots for a short time until the carrot growth forced its way through and resumed normal growth. Just a wild guess.

I try to keep the watering even and the beds weeded. Just a thought, I try to grow some red and purple carrots every year and have never noticed them larger at the base. I think all these are scarlet nantees.

I think could be the result of root nematodes, a mild case.
Perhaps rotate elsewhere if possible next planting.

KarenO I never had root knot nematodes until about 5 years ago. Mostly they are under control. I expect their damage to be forked and "beaded roots" I have a picture of one of the most infected carrots from a couple years ago but the insert image icon keeps asking for a url. Supposed to search my coputer for an image.
