This is an old thread, but I think this fits here. I have an insulated composter where I put all kitchen scraps. It performs well during warm weather, but using it winter time took some practicing. It is -15°C (5°F) outside currently, but the compost is running hot at 50°C (120°F). Week ago it was getting close to freezing in there, but luckily it started the process by itself and the temperature rose quite quickly.

It is almost wasteful to put it outside: free heating.

Very cool! Never saw anything like that.

I made this pile about a week ago. eleven pickup loads of horse manure with wood shavings and I added some ammonium sulfate.
Look how the snow is melting on it...my dog loves to sit atop the pile even when it is single digits outside!
It's been below zero F the last few nights and it's still cooking.
