In years past, I have not had good luck growing bell peppers, but I think my luck is changing with this bell pepper. http://www.burpeehomegardens.com/VegetableHerbGardening/PlantDetails.aspx?plantid=5124
It seems this bell pepper will grow up north and down south. The link above is a good read. Pictures taken this morning: |
Those look great! You'll have to tell us how they taste.
|
We ate the first one tonight. I lightly sautéed it in oil with a very little salt. How do they taste? Imagine a nice sized purple bell pepper that tastes better than Shish!to and Jimmy Nardello. Not really sweet and no heat. I can imagine using this pepper in any recipe that calls for peppers.
It will be grown in our garden from now on. |
Well that is a nice one. Burpee website states it sets fruit in cold and hot weather, which describes this year perfectly. It seems to be from ball seed. Did you get seed or plant from Burpee?

I got them from a swap as seeds.
After looking at my records/list, they came from last year's MMMM swap. |
Those look good, don't forget about me when you save some seeds. Those would be great for stuffing with some crawfish or shrimp.
When did you start the seeds? |
January 17th and I will be saving seeds. I'll probably start them around January 1 next year.
|
I've got a couple of Pinot Noir plants I started in March - glad to hear they are tasty! I am excited :)
|
wow. I have had similar luck with the large bell peppers and forget about pablano. A lot of ppl up here have gone with a "big jim" or something like that, but this looks good. will be interesting to see how she does when the heat sets in.
I have gone to growing the mini bells (gypsy, snack, yum-yum, etc...) and have had great success. "For whom the bell (pepper) tolls" - Hemmingway or Poe? |
I'm growing Pinot Noir too, but mine are still small, so it's good to see what they'll (hopefully) turn into. I thought it was an F1, though? If you save seeds, it will be interesting to see what the F2 generation brings.
|
You're right - they are hybrids http://www.burpee.com/vegetables/peppers/pepper-sweet-pinot-noir-hybrid-prod000841.html
I went to the Burpee site on the first post - it didn't mention hybrid. Okay, I won't be saving seeds after all. |
