Kozula's Crosses

The best known breeder and crosser of tomatoes in Poland is Anna Kozula, who has been producing her own varieties for five years, although she started out as a typical market grower with stable varieties. In her own words, She chanced into breeding, when a friend of hers brought a tomato, which was of an "amateur" variety, but tasty , beautyful and productive enough to warrant a market "experiment". There were 3 seedlings, from which seeds were taken, for this was thought to be a stable variety. 4 tunnels were planted, but.... total disaster. A strange mix of horned ones, including determinates and dwarves. In spite of the look most of the tomatoes were sold, because they found buyers because of their flavour. She decided to improve them by crossing and selection, and that has been going on for 5 years now with some improvement of the result along the road.
Now she has become a master of crossing, and her seeds were distributed to many different people, including me. Like she says herself, her market growing is different from everyone else's, because each plant is different (unique).
Most of her crosses were between "American" and Polish varieties, and I may post a complete list later.

This is a full list of what she offered one year ago. Some of the breeding lines may be semi-stable, as they are F3-F6. There is an updated list on The Tomato Garden, and Darthslater is doing the distribution in the US etc. (don't know positively if Canada is included).

The "varieties" 126-139 have an undisclosed parentage, but inferring from the fact that all dark varieties and "zebras" are from initial Copia crosses you can find out something. There is more information on The Tomato Garden, but even there it's incomplete.

It's 5-6 years later.... any updates?

I don't know how I missed this thread initially. I just found it thru a link at Tomatobase.

Anyway, I was given seeds for quite a few of the Kozula varieties. Several of them have been stubborn at giving me decent seeds. At the moment I have 6 varieties I list seeds for and several others I'm still working on. Some are a bit variable but many have stabilized fairly well. Most that I have are now at F5 or 6 or higher.

My personal favorite is #14 as that's a great little tomato I can take to market. I only take cherries and small stuff to market because I'm not allowed to sample if I have to cut anything. Cherries I can offer whole. And the taste is what sells them.

interesting. any pictures of these segregating crosses? Anything truly unique. I'm less interested in stable lines, more interested in things that are different. These polish tomato lines sound interesting.

Keen, why don't you PM Gunnar and ask. He just reappeared here after a long absence from Tville just several weeks ago and perhaps he can help.
