GH updates 2016-7

I built this from scraps

then installed a dutch bucket hydro system and threw in a few plants

1 week later the plants are starting to get accustomed to the hydro grow

and now, the plants are growing nice but I did change out the nutes, I think the 50lb bag of CalNit I bought a while back is weaker than Southern Ag

Here's a few shots of what's growing
Brad's Black Heart from Tom, the seeds were from 2010

Rajun Gardener December 6, 2016 09:37 PM

I know it's hard to see but all 5 seeds I started of Mat-Su from Cole has sprouted in 4 days, I didn't use a heat mat and the temps in the house has been 68-72. I just used a fresh bag of MG moisture control/3 months feeding potting soil.

AKmark December 6, 2016 09:59 PM

I am jealous. I was hoping today that the snow would finish sliding off of my greenhouses. LOL
Lookin good, us northerners can live through you for a few months, keep us posted.

Rajun Gardener December 6, 2016 10:12 PM

I will keep posted pics up for you to see what's happening.

Jimbotomateo December 6, 2016 10:22 PM

Your scraps gh looks awesome! Jimbo.

Salsacharley December 7, 2016 10:24 AM

This is really nice. I agree that your scraps are pretty darn nice. What are you going to do when those plants become gigantic? You've got some that really get big.

Rajun Gardener December 7, 2016 10:48 AM

I'll keep them pruned to single stem and start dropping the plant as it grows. I have almost 6' before I need to start dropping them.

Rajun Gardener December 9, 2016 05:37 PM

We had a bone chilling cold front come through and it got down to 37 last night.;) I had 2 small heaters set at 52-54 and they worked perfect. I'm glad we don't have many freezing nights. The tomatoes came out fine and some are flowering today.

Rajun Gardener December 9, 2016 05:42 PM

And Cole's Mat-Su are standing tall.

Cole_Robbie December 9, 2016 06:26 PM

Cool. I'm happy to see that.

Worth1 December 9, 2016 07:31 PM

What can I say, good job scraps are best.

Rajun , how's your greenhouse holding up ? Did ya use any special bracing for wind whatnot? :)Jimbo

Rajun Gardener December 15, 2016 02:24 PM

The GH is doing great Jimbo, here's pics from 12-13

These will go as soon as the tomatoes are ripe, I plan on building a table for transplants in the area

A volunteer growing in a potted rose I bought on clearance a while back, no clue where the seed came
from or what it is but it wants to grow

I have a few pepper plants I'm over wintering and some are still flowering, Cowhorn and Tobasco upper left

Mark, I started 5 seeds of each Saturday afternoon and Wednesday they started popping, all are doing good. 100% germ rate.

Cole, yours are about ready to transplant

Jimbotomateo December 15, 2016 03:23 PM

Awesome Rajun! To think you made that tight, as the kids say, gh out of scraps is cool! Can you PM me if nephew has any of those railroad spike knives available. Thanks Jimbo.

Rajun Gardener December 17, 2016 07:34 PM

Cole I transplanted and set them in the GH yesterday

Mark, everybody is awake but some still have blinders on

AKmark December 19, 2016 07:15 PM

Now I have plants to look at, it was -15 here the other day, a bit chilly for tomatoes. I will start my first batch under lights January 15, and I am ready to go. Keep us posted Rajun, nice to see green.

Rajun Gardener December 24, 2016 01:36 PM

12-24 update. The plants are starting to fill out nice with these warm temps, 79° today.

Update after the freeze last night, no damage to report. It's 37 right now but nice in the GH, no heaters running just a fan for air movement.

Lookin good, they will explode after being transplanted. How's the weather in your area this time of year? It's been pretty nice here -5 to -10 at night, 0 -5 during the day, almost a whole 6 hours of light, just wonderful. LOL

I feel for you Mark... But on the bright side, you get to start your gardening a whole lot earlier than I do.

Rajun Gardener, I am envious of your lush green plants. They sure look happy and healthy. I am so happy to see that you have had some success and making your own crosses. I will be looking forward to see how they progress. You are sure into some fun for next season with them. ;)

As you know, I am a fan of Daniel Burson. I am glad to see that you are growing it. Hopefully you can keep it's first blooms warm so that you do not get cat-facing. It seems that after the first fruits set that temperatures do not make such a big difference.

Rajun Gardener January 9, 2017 06:00 PM

This last front was too cold but we have nice temps for a week or so. The problem is we're getting about 10.5 hours of daylight but every day gets a little longer. Usually February is the coldest month with a few freezes so I'm hoping the Pineapple express continues till March, Sorry Cali but ya'll do need the rain.

If you had 20 hours of daylight you would have an AK summer going right now. We are looking to get blasted by increasingly colder temps.

Please keep posting those pictures. Those green leaves and blooms are like coffee to the winter soul... lol

Rajun Gardener January 19, 2017 03:04 PM

I just finished pruning/chopping leaves and lowering the plants. I totally messed up planting these huge plants mixed with shorter growing plants but I'll know better next time.
Here's what I chopped off the plants

The plants look naked, I'm sure that will set them back but it had to be done. Suckers grow so fast that in a few days they're huge.

These are Mat-Su Express, seeds from Cole Robbie. I transplanted them a few days ago, I put 3 in soil and 2 in buckets. All 3 in the soil are making buds already, these germinated between 12-4 to 12-6-16. The 2 in buckets will have visible buds tomorrow.
