What's beside the tomatoes
Hi,
This will be my first vegetable garden since I've moved. It will be bigger and can fit in more than just the tomatoes and not much else as it was before. I was wondering since the tomatoes are quite tall, what does everyone put beside them? I'm hoping to grow bell peppers, lettuce, onions, beets & okra & carrots. |
I have successfully grown lettuce close to tomatoes, as it benefits from some shade in hot weather. And basil grows well next to its best friend.
|
For fun one year I grew muskmelons and smaller watermelons near the tomato cages. The vines went up the cages and made it look like there were giant funny looking tomatoes in with some normal looking fruits.
|
I grow in 4'x12' or 4'x8' raised beds. The tomatoes are grown in one row down the long side, trellised on a cattle panel set about 1/3 of the way into the bed. The other long side of the bed is planted to a row of bush beans, or broccoli, or filled in with onion plants.

I also grow lettuce in between tomatoes, Muir to be exact, it's the best lettuce we've ever grown as far bolting, it's extremely slow to bolt, also does very well indoors during the winter, we grew 54 lbs in a 2' x 5' area during the wintertime.

I grow garlic in front of my tomatoes and have for a number of years. I have raised beds and 2 rows on the outer sides of my enclosed garden (deer netting surrounds it). I plant 2 rows of garlic in the fall in the front; last year a total of 90 cloves in the ground, this year 100. I plant tomatoes in the spring; a row of 8 on each side.
The garlic normally gets harvested in July allowing more room for the tomatoes as they take over the space. The tomatoes will get pulled after the first frost in the fall and a few weeks later the next year's garlic crop goes in. I test my soil in the spring and every few years I will test again in the fall as well. |
My raised beds are 6-ft. diameter round beds (from stock tanks). I plant the tomato plants in either the center or close to the north side with just enough room for the lettuce, spinach and cilantro to grow in the shade to the north of the tomatoes.
I grow peppers, basil, parsley & marjoram and sometimes squeeze in bunching onions & carrots to the south, east and west sides of the tomato plants. Other crops I grow in other beds and rotate what's planted in each group of beds. |
Hi,
I grow celery between the tomatoes - it's bigger and healthier than the one grown in a separate patch. |
This year in the "Hottest Months" the "Lescana" is one of my Biggest Red Tomatoes, Amen!!.
Did you Lescana this year? |
