White grano red grano and 1015Y. $1.99 a bunch.
I cant remember the seller but the roots were still alive they were so fresh.
The place is called Callahan's in Austin by the airport.
The place is huge they have everything under the sun even chickens ducks and goats.
I even bought a nice grape hoe and seeds while I was there.:D

I had a dream last night that our town had an annual onion growing contest.

I even remember the rules. :lol:
You picked your sets up at the store and registered.
You had to put down your address or where you were growing the onions so they could come out and inspect them.
You couldn't grow them in raised beds or in containers they had to be grown in native soil.
They weren't judged on size but flavor and the judging took place at the county courthouse on a given day.
I think it was some time in June or when ever the majority of everyone's onions stopped growing.
If you started from seeds you had to get the seeds from them and they had to be out of the seed starting flats before a certain size.
If you were caught cheating you were banned from competition for life.

I bet turning gardening into a competition would get a whole lot more people out digging in the dirt! I know so many people who just can't let any opportunity to compete pass by, but many of them are not gardeners.

My oldest brother said I was a freak because I was the only person he ever met that wasn't competitive.:lol:
I dont compete unless I know I will win and I dont bet on anything unless I know I will win.
I have a few good friends that know me well enough that if I am willing to put money on something they back off.:lol:

At work a few years ago they decided to have a big summer cook off and the people that came up with it had me in mind when the did it.
When they found out I wasn't interested they were flabbergasted.
I'm not t team player I dont follow other peoples rules and I do things my way when I want to.
The very idea of having a cooking contest with silly safety rules and plans goes against every thing I am.:lol:

I just bought another 3 bundles of 10 15 Y onions and planted one bundle already.:))
There were 61 onions in it.

Tomorrow the rest will be planted.
I am so glad I got them when I did a while back they were almost out.

That's too funny, I have the same experience. I don't remember many instances when i ask "wanna bet" and people accepting. Even DW, when she hears me asking someone, she's quick to advise them to pass, based on my reputation.

I'm getting ready to start my seeds any day now.

Okay I now have every onion I am going to grow planted I promise.
They are behind the house in the raised beds and in some of the areas I cut out for tomato plants.
Those few will just grow around the tomatoes.
I think I planted close to 100 like that.
I might be up close to over 500 onions now maybe more, not for sure.:roll:
I asked my Neighbor lady if she liked onions.
She doesn't like anything, not.
Lettuce.
Peppers.
Garlic.
Tomatoes.
Celery.
Cabbage.
Onions.
Okra.
Almost nothing.
I have no idea what on earth she eats to stay alive and portly.:lol:

Just a little update on the onion plants I put out.
They are greening up and starting to grow.
I have pulled a few here and there to inspect the roots and they are putting out new ones.
Just a little heads up about the roots.
Even if you have roots on your onion plants/sets dont expect those root to grow much if at all.
They will if they are fresh transplants but not something that has been in a store.
The plant has to start all over again with new roots.
Much in the same way with a palm tree.
On a palm all of those roots die back and new ones grow from the trunk.

I'm glad I saw your post today - it reminded me that I need to go water the onions.

I learned last year that growing tomatoes from cuttings is/are the same as you wrote about the onion roots. Tomato cuttings put in water grows roots but when they are planted out in soil - those roots are replaced by real ones.

I have been letting the top of the soil dry out and watering.
This takes about two to three days.

Just about every seedling I started from seeds has reached the coveted 1/8 inch mark.
Today with the warmer weather and sun and the mild nights they really put on a show of growth.
The little ones look like they have doubled in size.:D
Tomorrow I am going to work Plant Tone 5-3-3 into the soil and spray the place down with Lady Bug liquid plant food.:yes:

In about two weeks or so I will send my friend Loris a pictuer of her onions.:lol:

I never will forget her driving off in that little car the last time with the back seat full of onion tops sticking up.:lol:

Posting a picture so I can compare onion growth. :lol:

Looks like they are doing something.
What I have been doing about every other day is going around and making any leaning onions stand straight.
This way I wont have any flopping sideways onions.
As time goes by I have less and less flopping onion plants.
Today I only had about three.
As the roots get stronger they wont flop anymore and they will all be straight and tall.

While I was at the store (Home Depot) they had garlic cloves to plant I didn't even bother looking to see what kind they were.
Are these people kidding me you dont plant garlic in Texas in the spring.
