This fragrant tree is in a neighbors yard, and the sweet aroma fills the whole street! It is so pretty- can someone tell me what it is?

It could be many things, but a Black Locust tree or other Locust has wonderful scented flowers that look a whole lot like your pictures. https://www.google.com/search?q=black+locust+tree&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiEmO6K4OfhAhUlSN8KHeyTBi4Q_AUIDigB&biw=1138&bih=576&dpr=1.25

Looks like a Crepe Myrtle to me....

White Lilac tree ??

clkeiper April 24, 2019 07:46 AM

Is perhaps a lilac grafted onto a rootstock for tree growth and not woody shrub growth. it isn't a terribly easy photo to see the detail on. I think maybe a Korean/Japanese variety? or I could be totally wrong.

How about a closeup detailed picture of a leaf?

JoParrott April 24, 2019 10:24 AM

I know it is not a lilac--I grew up surrounded with lilacs! The flowers are about the size and shape of a man's thumb. I'll get a closer photo.
Also not crepe mrytle- I lived in Louisiana and love them.

Could it be a Linden tree? There are many varieties, though your blossoms may be too dense for some Lindens.

Labradors2 April 24, 2019 10:36 AM

I wonder if this is a Summersweet Clethra tree?

Linda

Looks like a type of bird cherry AKA mayday tree to me.
Introduced to the US from Asia and Europe.

I think you nailed it Worth! Well done :)

Linda

JoParrott April 24, 2019 07:01 PM

Thanks, Worth-- I'm pretty sure that's it.

It certainly looks like our native Prunus padus! (very pretty flowers and the berries can be used to prepare great tasting brandy/wine..)
