Don't fib, tell the truth! :-)

It's about that time of year when I'm sick of hot weather and the garden dominating all my activity. Just human I reckon. :-) Looking forward to the fireplace putting out some warmth and eating some cold weather type food.

... I could do with a hand down here Earl. Never seen so many weeds. It's the year of the weeds for sure.

Oh my. Don't wish cold weather on us Earl. I hate winter and everthing that goes with it. I suffer from S.A.D. and the closer winter gets the worse it gets, ls cold, ice, snow & flu.

BTW: My year is horrible. I usually have the counter, the frig and three window sills full of maters by now. I have about 19 tomatoes on the counter. Lucky for me, they are superb in flavor this year.

Need some good ideas for a cool dry summer next year, though.

A 250 Watt metal halide light fixture with a 6K daylight bulb can grow a lot of tomatoes indoors and eliminate S.A.D. along the way.

YES! I'm tired! Tired of gnats and weeds, tired of the hot kitchen! Looking forward to relaxing by the fire, browsing the seed catalogs and enjoying a cup of tomato soup that I've put back this season.

(SIGH) I have 6 more weeks of market remaining, but who's counting?!

yes i m ready for winter, after a bummer crop of maters and not much anything else but cilantro , basil and a few cherry tomatos.
Thank goodness i made freinds with a farmer who i got some great matos from and have been canning away like a mad woman.
20 jars of pickles
25 jars of mato sauce
15 jars of beans and dilly beans
veg soup
variety of soups
smoked hot peppers
sweet piclked bell peppers
and now i m doing applesauce by the bushel.
Winter don't fail me now :lol:
I can't wait to have some warm applesauce , and hot mato soup with pesto with a fireplace :D
smoked some matos and made a chilli sauce, using it on chicken tonight.
Look out Neil i might have a winner of a BBQ sauce :wink:

oops forgot i have to add 15 more jars of tomato soup , pearsauce, apple pie filling and beans
we will also do pumpkin pie filling to yummmy it is going to be a good winter

Sounds like you have a nice pantry full there, Sue!

We actually dipped down to 39* one night just about 2 weeks ago. I covered all my newly transplanted lettuces - gardening is not really over with the frost, but it's a different kind of gardening... no deliveries to make, just walk out to the patch and cut a fresh salad or pull some roots for a stew... now THAT, I am looking forward to!

Hi All,
I'm way over tomatoes right now. I've been away for a while due to my other gardening: CIDER. That's right both the sweet stuff and the hard stuff. I've pressed 53 gallons of apple cider this year. Some has been frozen for later and 25 gallons are currently fermenting:

I hope it turns out as good as last years (I only had 6 gallons last year).

So, you grow your own? (Of course... BROKEN APPLE TREE!) So, tell us about your orchard! We love this time of year... weekly trips to the local orchard - apple cider, apple pie, apple crisp, apple juice, apple butter....

yes miss_mudcat the pantry is looking good, actually our pantry is my closet floor :lol: DH hasn't made shelves for me yet :? hopefully he will get tired of walking over the jars :wink:
i only wish i had canned more tom juice v8 style.

Matermama,

I went to the local dollar store and bought cheap wooden shelves that come in a box (about 3 feet tall, 2 feet wide and 12 inches deep) and had my 10 year old son assemble it for me. I stuck it in the back of my laundry room closet and it works great. Holds a lot for such a small shelf... and it's very sturdy.

Yeowsah Brian...that is a beautiful sight....I am ready for pot roast, guiness and a nice fire too....I like the coming of winter but by January I have had enough...
