Benevento F1

We have a new tomato called Benevento. The seeds will be available in February. We are producing them now..

Red with yellow stripes. Pink interior. Dispersed locules, great for slicing and sandwiches. Combines heirloom flavor with commercial slicer characteristics. Clean fruit bottoms -- almost no mis-shapen fruits, even early in the season. Produces about 75 days after transplant.

Although not obvious from the title, this thread provides some background information on Benevento, which was called Lecce until we discovered a naming conflict.

It’s just beautiful Fred. Let’s see the inside!
Cant wait to try it

This is a bit misleading, because the fruit was super ripe.

I like misleading! That looks really nice and juicy, just right for my BLT!

Yum. Great interior. I’m excited to grow it this year. I have not grown a hybrid beefsteak in years but I think this one will probably change my mind.

That is a beauty! Any insight on disease resistance? I graft my OP tomatoes due to V wilt, but last year grew Green Bee on its own roots and it did just fine. I still have a bowl full of them sitting on the dining room table!

Disease resistance seems to be pretty good. Not quite as good as Green Bee most likely, but pretty good, although specifics not defined yet.

Our general approach with disease resistance is to breed with material known to have resistance, and to empirically select for both known and unknown resistance capabilities in challenging field situations.

We do not have the capability (or finances) to follow genetic markers, but our assumption is that any variety of ours (maybe Benevento) that trials exceptionally well and is released broadly will eventually have specific resistance capabilities determined.

Thanks Fred. Will have to keep an eye on the website in February.

Gee, Fred -- your releases are going to run me out of places to put them! ;)

Fred Hempel January 8, 2021 02:13 PM

Well, I hope you find a place!

Hi Fred - I'd love to give these a try, but it looks like Artisan Seeds only ships to the USA, is that correct? Is there a way to get these into Canada yet? I've long had my eye on a number of seeds from both yourself and Karen.

Yes. The store only ships inside the US.
