Striped pepper!

I got a striped pepper from the grocery store yesterday. Haven't tried it yet, but it's pretty.

The tag says Enjoya Striped Pepper
Product of Holland

It's a "discovered' mutant of an (orange?) bell from Holland. I've also seen them marketed as "Flame" peppers. Because they are bells they taste like bells, but do indeed look stunning.

One of those fell into my shopping cart too, whispering something about saving seeds....

Looks like a GMO with a tulip gene inserted.

ha, ha........... pfffffffffffffffffftttttttttt

however, looking this dude up by registered name there is some rather TASTY recipes online for this (& other) bell peppers.

Take a sniff of this one:

Stuffed Enjoya with risotto and prawns
You will need

1 onion, chopped
200g risotto rice
25g Grana Padano, grated
100g prawns
4 Enjoyas
700ml vegetable stock (from a stock cube or powder)
2 tablespoons olive oil, garlic and chili flavour
Preparation

In a large frying pan or small casserole dish, heat 2 tablespoons of oil and sauté the onion gently for 2 minutes. Add rice and fry for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Add the vegetable stock and bring to the boil. Boil the rice on low heat for 20 to 25 minutes until cooked, stirring occasionally. Add the prawns and the Grana Padano, along with pepper to taste. Stir thoroughly to mix. Slice the Enjoyas in two by cutting from top to bottom through the stem. Remove the seeds and membrane. Stuff the pepper halves with rice and refrigerate until serving.
Enjoy!

Is that a thing or was that a joke?

dmforcier May 11, 2016 10:28 PM

If you can't tell the difference, it was a joke.

This is the story behind Enjoya (aka Flame) sweet pepper:

And one biologist has said that stripes of Enjoya to appear only during fruit maturation which can't be due to any kind of mutation.

Andrey_BY May 12, 2016 01:01 AM

Type "p r o b o a r d s" instead of stars!

Or get in contact with Enjoya father Wilfred van de Berg in Facebook or via his company website: http://www.bergpaprika.nl/category/nieuws/

Well if it just appeared in his GH that would indicate it is a OP pepper and not a hybrid. That's what it sounds like to me anyway.

Edit: I emailed the guy, hope I get a reply. Thanks for all the great info Andrey, those peppers would sell like 1$ double whipped mocha lattes at my farmers market.

Starlight May 12, 2016 09:36 AM

Yes, thanks for the information Audrey! : ) It sure would be nice to get some seeds here.

BigVanVader.. I hope you get a reply too. They sure don't sell anything like that around here at the stores.
