I am so confused on "Winter Squash" When do you plant it?

I think it means it ripens more slowly and the squash keeps edible into the Winter. I've not grown any, just summer squash and zucchini for me, so I may wrong in my interpretation.

Winter squash does sound like a misnomer, as it could imply it's grown during the winter. It's planted in the spring, after the last frost, just like zucchini. Most, but not all, winter squash are picked right after the first frost, when the vines have died back and the skins hardened.
