Tomato.

Purple Haze seed may be hard to come by.

Purple Haze F1 was originally bred by Keith Mueller and was only available as plants from Laurel's Heirloomtomatoplants website and possibly Darrel Jones. As far as I know, no seed was ever available to the general public, just plants.

Quite a few people did try to grow out later generations to attempt to stabilize it with varying success. I see on Laurel's website she is now offering plants for something called Purple Haze Homegrown, which is a PL selection she developed that she thinks is stable. According to Laurel, proceeds from her Purple Haze plants continue to be donated to an organization devoted to curing autism, which was Keith's original plan.

Maybe someone here that has been more successful in stabilizing grow outs will pop up. I had some initial luck with an F4, but then it fizzled the next year I haven't done any more in about 7-8 years.

There's at least 2 other grow outs that I know of besides Laurel's: Kiss the Sky selected by Tatiana and Black Hole Sun by Bill Jeffers...

I grew Black Hole Sun in '16 and loved it, it had good flavor for me...

Heritage seed market has seeds for both of these btw...

I saved seeds from one of Laurel's plants in 2014 (I think) but I haven't done anything with them.

I bought some plants from "Fusion" here a few years ago and the tomatoes were excellent. Haven't talked to him in years so I don't know if he even grows them anymore.

I was going to mention Kiss the Sky. Tatiana says hers are stable, I grew them out last season and they were wonderful, and we're purple abundant cherries. The seeds from those grew a pink fruited saladette, not as tasty. So much for being stable. My original seeds were from a trade, not Tatiana.

My original F3 seed came from Bill and now I'm at F6. My last grow out was 2011, I think. I moved to town and quit growing for a few years. I think I sowed all my remaining F6 seed this year and I have 4 plants so maybe if I can get a decent crop, I'll have seed. Does anyone remember what they were selecting for? It's been awhile and I don't remember and my notes aren't handy at the moment.

I can check my freezer and see if I have any previous F's. I have so Dadgum many varieties, it's hard to keep track of everything. I'm not a breeder, I just happen to have friends that are. I'm more interested in growing and trying to save rare varieties than I am in breeding.

I got some recently from Delectation of Tomatoes.

They were selecting for flattened purple 1 oz cherries, RL.

Keith's original selection was a cross of Cherokee Purple X Brandywine stabilized as a large fruited very good flavored potato leaf plant. He has posted this information publicly a few times so this is not new info. I grew the last seed I had this year and wound up with 10 plants. All 10 were sold to customers and are long since planted.

Keith is attempting to make the cross again this year. I'm hoping to get some seed from him late this fall.

Yes, then the PL from that cross was bred with Black Cherry to produce Purple Haze. If memory serves me.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
