Big Beef
I used to always recommend Better Boys as the best all around hybrid tomato but I have a new favorite. Big Beef. They don't get huge like Beefsteak type tomatoes but they do produce a lot of really nice sized tomatoes. All of them are about the size of the one pictured in my hand. Very smooth, pretty shaped tomatoes. Taste good too. I have picked 7 tomatoes off the plant in the photo already and it's still going strong. I have had tomatoes plants give me lots of tomatoes before but never this many of such a really good size. Oh, and they produced the first ripe tomato in my garden as well beating my Better Boys, Cherokee Purple, German Queens, Parks Whoppers and even an Early Girl to the punch.

Early Girl F1 is early in name only. |
I might have to try that next year.I have Early girl,Rutgers,Black Krim ,Purple Cherokee and Box Car Willie that have tomatoes but none near being ripe.

I have one BB growing this year. Too many folks praised it on Tomatoville, so I had to give my Mom a chance to taste it :) So far, the plant looks nice and sturdy, and the size is reasonable. not like a huge monster (yet)..

Big Beef is my favorite multipurpose hybrid. I made the switch from Better Boy about 5 or so years back, when two Big Beef plants outproduced five Better Boys. If I could grow only one tomato, Big Beef would be it.
I'm trying something a little different with them this year...25 of them in about 27 foot row, suckered down to two growing tips and weaved...with 25 sweet peppers about a foot to the southeast spaced in the gaps. It was going to be single stem but they were under agribon to start. Between peeks, they pushed the top and each formed a large sucker with a second truss, right after the first truss. So, now it is two tips. So far so good; I just finished the 4th weave on the big beefs, and started the pepper weave. It's the kind of experiment I wouldn't bother trying with almost any other tomato. I need to make both salsa and chili sauce again this year and am hoping this does the trick. Here's to Big Beef! Pics from a few weeks ago... |
That looks awesome. And with that many Big beefs in the ground you sure aren't likely to have a tomato shortage this year. LOL!

:aprd: @ Nan's Mom!!

Dependable, productive as all get out and long holders when ripe. Mostly an heirloom guy, but would not have a season with out it!

I agree with you, Dewayne. If I had my druthers, I'd grow ONLY Big Beef, but you nice folks here on TV keep sending me all these cool seeds!! It's tough, I tell ya!
