Armenian cucumber

I have four Armenian cucumber vines growing up a 7 ft tall fence and have yet to get a cucumber off of it while my Sweet Success and Spring Swallow have been making for over a month and are nearing the end of their production. Has anyone else grown this cucumber? I got the seed in one of those 20 cent seed packets at Walmart. The vines have been full of blooms for weeks. They are light green almost yellow looking compared to other cucumbers I have grown. Hoping to get a few to try before the heat gets too much for them.

Yes, I grow them every year b'c they're never bitter and I like the taste and they produce huge crops of fruits. Always.

So I don't know what the problem is with yours. Do you see both male and female blossoms?

They do come in different shades of green and some are striped and some not, and I've grown I think all the variants and they all perform and taste about the same.

And they aren't cukes.

Cucumbers are in the genus and species Cucumis sativus but Armenian cukes, also known as snake or serpent cukes b'c of their long fruits that curl if of not trellised, which I never do, are Cucumis melo, which is the genus and species for melons.

Carolyn I found one hidden in the folige this morning and picked it. It is about 14 inches long with deep creases in it. I also found a small one about 6 inches long and about as big around as my little finger. I don't know at what size it is best to pick them. Do you eat them the same as cucumbers and do they need peeling?

Yes, you eat them and use them as you would cukes and I think they taste a heck of a lot better than most true cukes I've ever grown. They don't need peeling and I usually try to harvest them when they get to be maybe a foot long although I admit that some get lost in the foliage and I've harvested some about a foot and half long but I wouldn't want to go much beyond that.

Eventually they turn yellow as do almost all cukes when they're too ripe to eat.

I also prefer Japanese true cuke varieties such as Suyo Long for great taste and production.

Thank you for the information. I guess the Armenian just takes longer than the other two cukes to make fruit.

You were right Carolyn. I love the taste of the Armenian and will be growing it again next year. They are very sweet and have an excellent flavor. They aren't producing many fruits but the temps are near 100 nearly every day now and I don't know if any cucumber can produce much in that. I'm even going to try it in the fall I like it so much.

I grew mine inside from seeds , but when i put it outside in ground it was killed . So I put more in pots, after growing nice. They till died again, I now have some more, only 2 plants in a pot,. I give up now.

Mine were much slower to get started than my other cucumbers so I gave them a couple of doses of fertilizer and just kept waiting til they got some size on them before I transplanted. Next year I think I will try to start the seed at least 2 weeks earlier than my other cucumber seeds.

I love mine finally took 50 days before they grew, How do i save seeds from them now, i want them next year. I herd to let one grow the longest time, a senior cuke? and then dry seeds from it?
