Baize - I grew Negrillo de Almoguera 2 seasons ago and we loved them. They aren't as dark as some, more a deep plum color. You'll like them, I'm sure.

In Spain, many pink/purple tomatoes are called blacks. Real blacks, or very dark ones are fairly rare.

I am probably going to embarass Darjones by posting this complement about a tomato he saved - it's called spudatula and Terry from Secret Seed Cartel has it listed for sale. I can't wait to try this tomato because I have had good experiences with Black from Tula... anyway I recommend anyone who likes black tomatoes to check this tomato out at Secret Seed Cartel.

Jennifer, I'm a bit confused about Darrel being credited with "saving'' Spudatula.

It's a PL version of Black From Tula that originated with Bill Malin who called himself SpudLeaf Willie and if you look at the search below at the very last post you'll see him posting about it.

http://tomatoville.com/search.php?searchid=1162269&pp=30

it's long been known and predates all the posts in the above link b/c Bill shared seeds with lots of folks who have kept it going. it's really a pink/black since it has a clear epidermis. I grew it many years ago , but as with Spudakee i don't know of anyone who has directly compared it with Black From Tula as they have with the three PL variants of Cherokee Purple, to know if it's the same except for leaf form, or not.

Hope that helps.

LOL, Carolyn

That is because I typed the wrong variety name. I'm not feeling well again. I meant to type "Spudatula Black." I think that's where I created some confusion.

Anyway the service from secret seed cartel was excellent, and I can't wait to try spudatula black.

PS it's good to see you back online :)

Here's what you meant to type:

And you can see that Bill Malin still got involved b/c when Darrel sent it to him he used his trademark Spud imprint for renaming it t rather than the name Darrel had used.I see a couple of other places are also selling seeds for it as well.

From all the years I've known Terry I wouldn't expect anything other than great seeds and wonderful service.:)

I noticed Secret Seed Cartel offers my Bosque Blue in their well-chosen selection of varieties.
It is a fine tomato and it is nice to see it picked up by others. Thank you, Terry, and good luck with everything!

Nice site, goose creek tomato, never had them.

Baizanator February 2, 2013 11:46 PM

Terry,

I had 0% germination on my Maiden's Gold and, since all my MG seeds are from one source, I've replaced them with Negrillo de Almoguera. I'll keep you updated on the progress this year.
