oregon sugar pod

This is my first year growing these. How do I tell when the
are ready? I have been sampling and I looked at the package.
The pods seem rather stringy, not sweet, do you string them?
And what would happen if you let the peas get bigger? Thanks
Piegirl

The 9 page topic about Sugar Snaps and Snow Peas here is pretty much the definitive topic, at least the best topic I've seen so far: ;)

Piegirl,

Yes, allow them some more time to blump up a bit. They become sweeter. I usually string them, though I guess you could choose to not string 'em. Just don't let them go too long without picking them.

Mine are bursting out. The vines grow to 6 feet tall. Well, mine are 7' and probably still growing. They make an interesting (if short-term) hedge.
