Experiment for making shallots bigger
 

Hi Y'all ,
I awhile back I saw a YouTube video about giving your onions a haircut a couple of times over winter and it seemed to make the onions increase in size. I'm wondering if this would be true for shallots and maybe garlic. What to y'all think.

I'm thinking with the onions it's because you're growing from seed. (as in true, tiny real seeds vs bulbs). And you started them really early months before planting so the haircut encourages them to grow extra leaves (not just one or two). :?!?:
Then again it would not be practical to haircut onions from sets in the field (or shallots or garlic for that matter). So who knows what the results would be? I'm curious... try and tell. ;)

I grew onions from seed the past two years. I gave the onions a haircut twice while still in the flats. I didn't see any difference in onion size in 2016.

This year, winter forgot to happen here resulting in smaller onions.

Onions, shallots, and garlic will grow larger when planted in light/loose soil. Shallots will actually rot in the ground if it stays too wet.

I only trim my onion plants started from seed when they get too tall to fit under my lights. Never heard about the possibility that this would result in bigger onions.

Old wives tale, several videos on YouTube about it including this person.
Just like cutting a pigs tail off will make it grow faster and fatter.:lol:
