Seeking Information - Virginia Heirlooms
 

I'm not certain if this should go here, but I couldn't think of a better spot.

I am putting together a list of varieties that originated in Virginia (not West Virginia) so that I know which to look out for. So far, the list is short and contains both old and modern varieties. Any additions or corrections would be greatly appreciated!

You can add Maiden's Gold. Its history goes back to Saltville, Va. in the 1950's.

Wild Bill's Old Timey

KBX did not originate in VA.It was Martha Hufford ( gardemamahere atTville) who does live in VA who found it, the PL version of Kellogg's Breafast,in a pack of commercial seeds she bought from at place in CA.

So you could say that KBX originated in CA, but was found by Martha in VA, but it didn't originate there.:)

There are a few others I have questions about as having originated in VA but right now I just don't have the time to go searching.

Ah, I see. Thank you for clearing that up, Carolyn. I'm a bit skeptical about a few of the others, too, but I left them on the list 'just in case'. I'll keep digging.

Do you happen to know which of those are definitely from Virginia?

Being from Georgia, I appreciate why you want to exclude those renegade West Virginians from your list, but why specifically?

Perhaps the reason is b'c there already is a list of West VA varieties, link above.;)

I'd like to collect and grow the Virginia varieties... for the sake of heritage, I guess. Trying to figure out which they are has been a challenge of its own, so preserving and spreading those varieties seems important to me.

Jeff,I've grown quite a few of them and they are well known,but there's also others on your list that aren't from Viginia, but I don't have time right now to do some background checks to confirm that.

I'm in no hurry. It's becoming a little project of mine. The only hurdle so far, a significant one at that, is the lack of resources. I might end up joining the SSE after all for access to the yearbooks.

Jeff, if you join SSE you get the Yearbook for that year if any are still available and that's it.

I'm lucky to have all the Yearbooks going back to 1975 except for the 1982 one and there's a reason for that since I joined SSE only in1989.

The SSE Yearbook for each year is now online, for members only and you can do a search for a speicifc variety which tells you who listed it and when, but as I recall, not the full blurb that was listed initially.

I don't participate with the online. But these days ALL submissions by listed members are put on the online and then the paper Yearbook printed from that.

I don't accept requests from the online, and say so, and since there's no way for folks to print the SSE 2013 Request form from the online right now and it goes up at least a month or so, before the paper one is sent out, my listing anything with SSE is up in the air.

Are you familiarwith Tania;s excellent website b/c she's copied off the histories for many many varieties?

At the top of that home page there's a link to short cuts and if you know the name of a variety I suggest you hit that link and search via the alphabetical method.
