Bigger Garden Or Get Some Containers?
If you had the option, which would you choose. I would assume a bigger garden but containers have their advantages too.
Let's use this comparison. A new 4x12 bed or six 20 inch pots. Tim |
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (both....)
well, it is not that easy.....if the new bed had great soil, great sun exposure and there was no threat of deer, that would be my choice. I added pots to increase my growing area, but also to take advantage of much better location than my large garden. good question, tho! |
Tim-I have never grown in the ground-I have 45 15 gallon containers or grow bags that I use-and I am always trying to figure out how to find room for more. My wife is the obstacle in that, and she always wins the discussions on this subject! Michael

Thanks.
I am wrestling with the thought of making one more bed. The soil would be "average" and in need of amendments. The mix for the pots and some black cow composted manure would be a good start for the bed. Cost wise the bed probably could get a good dose of extras for the price of containers and mix. I've got too much to think about and do. Lots of stuff going on right now that doesn't pertain to tomatoes. Tim |
Tim,
First off love your name! You must be an intelligent guy :P Secondly, although I may have more room to till up the soil, I still prefer my homemade earthboxes. Every year I plant in ground and in my earthboxes, and every year my earthboxes are better (at least for tomatoes). No weeding, no chance of over watering. They are fool proof, and I have been accused of being one often. I guess the real question is why i keep planting things "in ground" rather than be satisfied with a whole bunch of modified RubberMaid Totes in my yard? Probably because when it comes down to it, deep down feel like I am cheating with the containers. I guess I have to plant "in ground", as God intended to feel like a real man. Sad?? - Tim |
how many gallons is a 20 inch pot. and how deep is the pot. I never heard of such a big pot. what kind of pot is this.

I extened the garden, and added
a bunch of 5-gallon buckets ! It was the only way ~ lol ~ Tom |
