Aeration: bottom, side, or Both?

I'm trying to make heads or tails on aeration holes. Most designs of SIP I have seen have them in the bottom bench, above the water reservoir. Or, conversely, they have holes drilled all along the sides.

I scored these feta cheese containers from work. They are 1.5 cf, about 10 gal. I don't want to drill holes in the sides if I'm not going to get improved performance. I have a bunch of coroplast signs that I'm going to use for the separation between the reservoir and the grow media. I will have to drill openings for the wicks but I want to know up front before I do any cutting.

Whats your take on aeration holes

Above the water reservoir. It keeps the SIP from flooding and also provides aeration.
