Anna Maria's Heart X Hardin's Miniature

4 Attachment(s)
I crossed Anna Maria's Heart X Hardin's Miniature this past summer.
Anna Maria's Heart = pink, heart, indet, 6-12 oz, full size plant.
Hardin's Miniature = red, elongated pointed cherry, determinate growth, everbearing, 1 oz, two sets of dwarf genes (12" tall).

HM would have made a better female parent as a successful cross would show in non-dwarf seedlings. AMH was used as the female in desperation because no other crosses took.

Here is the setup; five LED lights surrounded by aluminum foil to reflect light back to the plants:

The seedlings are droopy like the female parent. They smell odd like the male parent. 5 seedlings were selected to grow on in a single 5-gallon pot. Medium was Master Gardener Bumper Crop Organic Gardener's Gold Potting Soil, with time-release Osmocote and ground eggshell. Here is the aluminum foil peeled back to see the pot with plants at time of first ripe fruit:

The seedlings were stocky and much shorter than the female parent. Here is a measurement of a typical vine:

The plants ranged from 8"-9" tall at first flowering, and 41-43 days from sowing to first flower. Germination occurred on 10-22-17 and ripe fruit appeared on 1-8-18, 78 days from sprout to ripe, or 83 days from sowing to ripe. Here is the first ripe fruit:

Gin3ll has generously offered to help me grow out the F2's this year. I will be looking for a full size fruit that tastes like HM, as this is what my mother would like. Watch this space for updates.

Congratulations on these, Nan! I remember reading about your cross earlier this Fall (maybe in one of KarenO's threads?), and it's great to see the follow up - keep us posted!!

I received some HM seeds from you in the MMMM and hope to grow it this year.

KarenO January 8, 2018 10:24 PM

Well done! You will have so much fun growing your F2’s. Should be lots of diversity
Best wishes, will follow along with your progress

Sheesh, Karen starts off her Karma project with Ludmilla's Pink heart which i think she got from one of my seed offers and I got it from Reinhard Kraft in Germany.

Now Nan is using Anna Maria's
Heart and here's where that came from'

At least I was lucky to play a part at the start of two breeding projects, but that was it.:)

KARMA is a cross of Ambrosia Gold X Captain Lucky, I am sorry Carolyn, but we cannot give any credit due to you for these. Also folks, the correct spelling for KARMA in our project is all capital letters.

Nothing to be sorry about at all but someone's breeding project DID start out with Ludmilla's Pink Heart, I just can't remember who that was. Can you remember?

Bad me used karma, small letters, when I should have used capital letters as in KARMA.

Now that was an unforgiveable error on my part.

Lastly,I am NOT one who actually looks for credit for parents of crosses that led to something really good, but I do like to see credit being given where merited and now I'm talking about those seed vendors who always give credit and those that never do.

IMO Tania's database is THE best except when in a few cases she has been given wrong information.

Well, Carolyn, you're welcome to sample any tasty hearts that come of this project! I think you like them a little on the sweet side, no? The one I'm making for my mother will probably not be to your liking as it will be more tart (and may or may not be a heart), but many other goodies can come from this mix. I don't know what my friend Eugen (Ginll) is going to select for yet, as we will be developing his selections as well as mine.

I picked the first tomato today to let it ripen in the warm kitchen. If I'm this excited about the F1, I'm going to be downright batty over the F2's. :panic::dizzy::P

I certainly will.

And good luck with the growout(s)!

Nan_PA_6b January 12, 2018 08:10 PM

Thanks, everybody!

I've decided to make a second selection in the F2's: a miniature heart. That's two sets of dwarf genes, with small heart-shaped fruit. Adorable. It would be great if the plant performed like the Hardin's Miniature, bearing constantly.

Just cleaned the first F1 fruit, extracting 100 seeds for F2 plants. The taste was strong, good, tart.

Exciting news! Keep us updated with pics. It is so fun to see what folks are developing!

A set of F2 seeds are in transit to Romania right now. The next thing will be Eugen starting the first F2's late Feb or early March.

I'll be starting F2's on this side of the pond April 1.

Transplanting in bigger pots RAE F2 (17 seedlings from 20 seeds). You can see differences between seedlings (height, thickness), beautiful plants :)

Happy Easter day Nancy!

PS: how to upload directly picture here? "Please enter the URL of your image" ?

To answer your question adding pictures, you don't initially use the Image button, but click on the "paperclip" where it will bring up a popup and allow you to put in files. If they're images they'll automatically display (I was going to send this as a PM, but realized you can't put attachments on a PM.

Highlighting what you want to click:

and then the popup:

And then after you have the attachments listed below the message, you can then click on the attachment button again and click on the image name you want to appear at a certain point in your message (it uses the "ATTACH" bracket). You can use the image button at this point instead and copy the link of the image into the URL popup (which uses the "IMG" bracket), but then the image will appear in your message and be listed again at the bottom. Also note that your images must be below the size limits indicated on the popup.

Hope this helps.

There is another "official" description on how to post pictures in the "Photo Gallery" subforum (though I think a fully graphic guide might be useful) and since it is "official" I thought I'd link to it rather than clutter up up CrossTalk with off-topic post(s).

Thx crmauch, I used to use "quick reply" and there you do not have "paperclips".
