Striped pepper!
1 Attachment(s)
I got a striped pepper from the grocery store yesterday. Haven't tried it yet, but it's pretty.
The tag says Enjoya Striped Pepper Product of Holland |
It's a "discovered' mutant of an (orange?) bell from Holland. I've also seen them marketed as "Flame" peppers. Because they are bells they taste like bells, but do indeed look stunning.

Talk about perfect for unique stuffed peppers!

One of those fell into my shopping cart too, whispering something about saving seeds....

Looks like a GMO with a tulip gene inserted.

ha, ha........... pfffffffffffffffffftttttttttt
however, looking this dude up by registered name there is some rather TASTY recipes online for this (& other) bell peppers. Take a sniff of this one: Stuffed Enjoya with risotto and prawns You will need

1 onion, chopped
200g risotto rice
25g Grana Padano, grated
100g prawns
4 Enjoyas
700ml vegetable stock (from a stock cube or powder)
2 tablespoons olive oil, garlic and chili flavour
Preparation In a large frying pan or small casserole dish, heat 2 tablespoons of oil and sauté the onion gently for 2 minutes. Add rice and fry for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Add the vegetable stock and bring to the boil. Boil the rice on low heat for 20 to 25 minutes until cooked, stirring occasionally. Add the prawns and the Grana Padano, along with pepper to taste. Stir thoroughly to mix. Slice the Enjoyas in two by cutting from top to bottom through the stem. Remove the seeds and membrane. Stuff the pepper halves with rice and refrigerate until serving. Enjoy! |
That is one pretty looking pepper. : )

Is that a thing or was that a joke? |
If you can't tell the difference, it was a joke.

This is the story behind Enjoya (aka Flame) sweet pepper:
http://www.hortidaily.com/article/17276/New-red-and-yellow-striped-pepper-is-named-Enjoya http://www.melissas.com/Enjoya-Peppers-p/1563.htm And one biologist has said that stripes of Enjoya to appear only during fruit maturation which can't be due to any kind of mutation. Well if it just appeared in his GH that would indicate it is a OP pepper and not a hybrid. That's what it sounds like to me anyway.
Edit: I emailed the guy, hope I get a reply. Thanks for all the great info Andrey, those peppers would sell like 1$ double whipped mocha lattes at my farmers market. |
Yes, thanks for the information Audrey! : ) It sure would be nice to get some seeds here.
BigVanVader.. I hope you get a reply too. They sure don't sell anything like that around here at the stores. |

That was my first thought too! I can still try growing it this year... |
If someone finds seed please let us know. Im wanting to grow these with hopes of getting my kids to eat peppers.
|
Joke.
It looks like a mutation similar to the one(s) that cause striping in tomatoes. Since the leaves on the plants look normal, I would guess it is not some kind of chimera that must be vegetatively propogated. I bet it is heritable.
Is that a thing or was that a joke?
|
Have you tried cutting peppers in half and putting ice cream inside?
If someone finds seed please let us know. Im wanting to grow these with hopes of getting my kids to eat peppers.
|
It's got to be a hybrid, right? I just can't see it being open pollinated.
|
Have you tried cutting peppers in half and putting ice cream inside?
I just might do that:)) if they dont like it after that then i suppose there is no hope for them. Its funny because my daughter loves the salsa i make with Carolina Reaper peppers cut into it but wont touch a bell pepper. Im still working on my son to like peppers as well as tomatoes. Its sad because hes my right hand man in the garden but wont eat the maters. |

Thats what im thinking but i will still grow it and try to capture the striping either way. Like i need another project. |
Sprouts Farmers Market grocery store chain carries these peppers. At least the ones in Northern CA do. ;)
|
Good info, Andrey. Thanks.
The peppers are all over the US. First seen here in Texas, then in several places in New England & NE, then SF area?, then PNW, etc. Don't believe anyone that offers seeds unless they say that they got them from a bought pepper. The propagators certainly won't be offering seeds. So no independent info on whether they grow true from seed, but expect that they will. |
It might be a hybrid, but I don't assume so. Green Zebra isn't a hybrid.
|
If this pepper was discovered in a glasshouse 2 yrs ago, it is unlikely that it is a hybrid, as 2 years would not be enough time to create 2 true-breeding parental lines that were striped.
This assumes that, like in tomatoes, the striping is recessive. If the striping is dominant, Enjoya (the stripey pepper) could be a hybrid. My bet is that it is PVPd and/or they have tried to patent it. |
I agree with Fred, it couln't be a hybrid if the story behide it is true.
|
I too agree that it probably isn't a hybrid. Thank you for the links you posted earlier in this thread Andrey.

That's great if it's OP. Although if so I think it was an unwise business decision for them not to wait to make a hybrid. Even if they got a pvp, Intellectual Property law is about money. The idea is that someone else is making money by stealing your brand. The punishment is almost always 3x profit. For people like us, who just give each other seeds, the worst that could happen is a judge's order to stop doing so, but no one is going to spend the money to get that order; it's not worth it.
